Hi!
My whole life I’ve been fascinated with large prehistoric-looking fish, such as a Arapaima, sturgeon, bichir (can a Senegal possibly work in my tank?), Barracuda (though my tank is freshwater), snake heads, and stuff like that.
I have always wanted something like that, I just don’t have nearly enough space. I would love something that looks “very dangerous“, even if it’s not actually dangerous/aggressive. I would also prefer it to be a decent size, nothing too small, I’m thinking maybe 6-10”, but I don’t really care., I know I don’t have many options since the tank is only about 12” wide. My tank is 55 gallons. I know this is kinda a weird question, but are there any fish that could go in my tank that look like prehistoric “monsters”? I want this to be the “scary fish tank” which is weird, but all of my other tanks have goldfish and harmless corys and stuff, lol. Sorry for all the beginner questions, I’ve never kept anything larger or more aggressive then a fancy goldfish. And, I’m not really looking for plecos, I have a rubber lip in (temporarily, its a grow out tank) in my 20 gallon, and he’s kinda shy and he hides a lot, I love him he’s adorable, but I don’t really want another because they’re so shy. Thanks!

EDIT: I also forgot to mention I prefer long fish that look cool from top view, such as arapaima, bichirs, and snake heads, as opposed to taller ones, such as arowana and most cichlids, but any fish will do, I’d just prefer fish that are longer from head to tail and shorter from top to bottom if that makes sense lol

I recommend captive bred Senegal Bichir. Not only do the look Prehistoric they are a specie that date back in the Cretaceous period when dinosaur roamed the earth.

Welcome aboard

A couple come to mind
Bichirs( I would stick to Senegals, Delhezi and Moklemembe They seem to stay the smallest 8-12' and were alive at the same times as the dinosaurs try to get captive bred ones though as they stay smaller), Ctenopoma, African knife fish, African butterfly fish, Solo red wolffish, Solo piranha (Not RBP or other schooling ones), Smaller spiny eel, Gold wolf fish

Delhezi bichir (I have two they eat EVERYTHING)

Leopard ctenopoma (I have one and he is definitely a little monster eats everything and Loves mealworms)

African Brown Knife fish (I have three and they are very personable. they dont look mean but mine shred apart and eat 4" dead smelt meant for my bichirs)

Peacock spiny eel (Max size 10-12")

Red wolf pretty docile as far as wolfs go but really mean as far as fish go. The should be kept solo (Max size 8-12")

Gold wolf pretty much the same as the red wolf just more active

African butterfly fish cool top water predator (Max size 4-6")

Thank you for the replies!

I do like African butterfly fish, but from what I’ve heard of them they are practically glued to the top of the aquarium, I think I prefer bottom dwellers or fish that will go everywhere, but thanks for the great suggestion!

I love the idea of a Senegal, they’re gorgeous and they look so cool. That’s the fish that I know I have to have, and I think I’m going to go with one.
Does anyone know anything about Malawi eye biters? I love the way their face is shaped, but I don’t know if they can go in such a small tank. If they can, could I keep one with a Senegal Bichir?

I think a red wolf or gold wolf would get too big for a 55.
Min tank size would be 75-gallons for them imo.

I think gold wolfmight as they are more active but I think a Red wolf would be fine they tend not to move around as much so a 10" not active fish in a 12" wide tank is ok in my opinion. Not ideal but OK

Kelly_Aquatics, those are some gorgeous fish! I love the red and gold wolf fish in particular. And the african brown knife fish is cool too, I only heard about them for the first time earlier today when I was doing a bit of research on fish for my tank. I love the idea of a Senegal bichir, could an African brown knife fish or a gold wolf go with one?

Kelly_Aquatics Kelly_Aquatics summed it up pretty good. Dragon gobies are another fish that comes to mind. Raphael cats may fit the bill.

Not my pic.
