Small-ish prehistoric looking fish for a 55 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Invisible Invisible I have my bichirs with my African Brown knifes in a 75g with some other oddballs so maybe one captive bred senegal with maybe 3 brown knife would work.as for the wolf In my opinion a bichir and any wolf species together in a 55g tank is asking for trouble so if you want a wolf in a 55 I would go red wolf solo.

Solo piranha (Not RBP or other schooling ones)

Sorry for being so interested in in literally all these fish and asking all sorts of questions on them. But I recently came across wimple piranha, though I couldn’t find much info on them, and I couldn’t really find out if they need to be kept in schools, but apparently they only get about 6”, so if they needed to be in schools, it probably wouldn’t be too much trouble to have multiple, at least not too much bio load, they could be super aggressive I don’t know lol

Raphael catfish are so pretty! How large do the get and do the need to be in schools?

Dang it looks like everyone beat me to this lol.

Wimpels are rare and expensive. But yes they do need schools. If you like piranhas a solo of the smallest Serras or a solo red belly would be great. They are nasty and beautiful. Exodon tetras are pretty cool too, only 3-5 inches but after just like piranhas. You can keep dozens in that size tank.

Red wolf is pretty inactive, but very fun at feedings. Gold wolf is too active.

Raphaels get 6-9 inches and can be solo. They hide very well though and chances are you will never see it.

Peacock eels are very fun, they learn to recognize you eventually too!

Senegal bichir is very good for that tank.

Puffers are also very fun and rewarding to keep.

Prehistoric monster fish may fit what you are looking for, I know next to nothing about them except that they bury themselves.

Freshwater frog fish is a relative to anglerfish, so big and scary.

If you went saltwater or brackish there are a number of good options too (morays, lionfish, etc.)

Thank you for the suggestions! Very informative

Red belly piranhas are illegal where I live, how large do the other type you mentioned get? Do they need to be in schools?

I looked at Hogchokers, very interesting and cool! How big are they?

The spiny eels also sound cool, there are too many options lol. I like the idea of a personable fish

Could any of these fish go with Senegal bichirs? I think I have my heart set on a Senegal but not sure yet

Cats and eels should be good with the bichir, as well as african butterflies and leaf fish. Just get the bichir smaller than the rest so it doesn’t try to eat them early (they grow fast).
If red belly piranhas are illegal by you, the rest are too. Exodons are a tetra though and will likely be legal. They get 3-5 inches and are little psychopaths. They need very large schools or will kill each other. Serrasalmus is a genus that holds most piranha species. Most are quite large, but a few are only 8 inches or so. They are all solitary.
Hogchokers get about 5 inches and are a brackish flounder.
Puffers and cichlids are known for their personalities and get to know you very well.
If you like amphibians, African clawed frogs and axolotls are amazing, just make sure they are legal in your state.
If you live outside the US, get a snakehead.

Can I keep a Malawi eye biter in a 55 gallon? If not I like the idea of the exodon tetras (if the Bichir doesn’t eat them, but they seem large enough for it to not, but I don’t know) or the eel.

I also did a bit of research into red bellied piranhas, since I’ve loved them ever since I was like 5 years old and first saw them. I found out I could get one if I have a permit, which I probably could get. Is it possible to keep one in such a small tank and it still be happy? I know they aren’t very active if not in a school, and apparently they only get about a foot long! For some reason I was thinking they got much larger. Though I’m still kind of hesitant about the idea of one, just since they can be so aggressive, I would literally be scared to ever stick my hand in the aquarium lol, but I also i
kinda like the idea, I’m very torn lol

In case I can’t get a permit or I decide against a piranha I will probably do the school of exodon tetras (unless the Bichir eats them of course), a medium sized puffer (suggestions for types?), or an eel.
