what is the smallest shark you can buy? i mean real saltwater shark. because when i was younger i used to go fishing at the ocean and we caught small sharks...we called them sand sharks. if i remember right they were usually under a foot but up to two feet in length.

The smallest of the cat sharks gets 2 and a half feet and needs a 250-300 gallon tank to be happy. Those sand sharks were juvenile dogfish which get bigger. We caught one that was 4 feet not too long ago.

i would more recomend a 400+ gallon something along the lines of 6'x4' round tanks with no corners are better for sharks

Well - generally the smallest sharks for home aquaria are either Coral Catsharks, or small bamboos like the Gray.

Both will grow between 2-2.5' in length.

Either is a fairly good choice for someone considering on keeping a shark in a home aquaium. Although they do require large tanks.

BTW - while the term "sand shark" is a general term used by fisherman to describe small coastal sharks. While that may include the Smooth dogfish, it can also be used to describe small coastal requiem sharks like the Atlantic Sharpnose, which will grow to about 3.5-4 ft. as adults.

are the bamboo sharks or cat sharks expensive? and also how expensive is a round aquarium that would accomodate a shark that size? i always kinda thought that sand shark was a broad term but was never certain. thanks!

Bamboo and cat sharks can be found cheap. I've seen as low at $35.
Never buy a nurse shark. I don't know of a single private hobbiest with a tank big enough for one.
