I am finishing the setup of my 180 gallon tank. I have everything all ready to go and the tank filled but have one small leak. Where the pump is connected to the sump, I am getting a small leak.

At first I tried to put a rubber seal (gasket?) on the water side of the pump (that's how the old owner had it setup) and that didn't work. So I put one on both sides and it almost worked but it still leaks very slowly.

I've had people advise against using silicone or any other sealant but I'm running out of options. Should I find a way to tighten it down more? Any ideas?

use teflon tape around the threads of the bulkhead
clean the rubber gasket
tighten the bulkhead but not too tight
too tight will cause the rubber gasket to leak from the compression

So I shouldn't use silicone?

I would definitely try to fix it without using silicone first. Go with the teflon tape and the tight but not extremely tight method first. If that doesn't work, you can try silicone.

Go with tefflon. I try and stay away from silicone. It can ripple and mess up.

Only one leak huh?! I celebrate that.

Try Plumber's Goop if it comes down to it. Loosen the connection, dry it completely add the Goop and let it half cure, then snug it up and let it finish curing.

Is it leaking at the threads or gasket?

Don't reuse a gasket that's been over-tightened.

Is the hole to large?

LMAO , just one leak
Teflon tape and silicone better safe than sorry as i spot a surge suppressor on the floor :)

Since everyone already mentioned every good idea, I'm gonna say to use some bubble gum to fix it.
