Small tankmates with rays?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The 1st ray i had..i believe he was 14" when i had to rehome him..never ate any of my fish no matter what size they were and he was kept with all dif. sizes. He'd swim along the glass and go right over top of them but never tried to eat any. I think if a ray ever starts taking out fish itll never stop trying.
I love the puppy pic! :D

I have tried different species of tetras and giant danios and all have disapeared after a day to a couple of weeks. But then I tried a group of 10 giant hatchetfish. I think the last one rounded a year in the tank. They stay at the surface and jump when attacked, so the rays have a difficult time trying to catch them. You can see a couple in the photo.

I have 13 colombian tetras, four angelfishes and a pair of Apistogramma agassizii with my 17" female motor stingray has worked fine for at least 6 months in my 300g+ tank. I have a lot of hiding places and a few plants which is important. The smaller fish takes advantage of the mess the stingrays leaves when eating looks really cool with a school of small fish following a large ray.

Notice everyone replying is keeping bait fish with rays... anyone keeping bigger fish with problems? Like some emperor blue hooks/emp red hooks, tinfoil barbs, etc?

Another week has past and the rams are still there.

I also have a scat and severum which do fine.

How has the MBU been to your rays?
I had one and decided it would be best to get rid of it in lieu of some rays

I kept the puffer with the rays for a year and a half. There were no problems. Many people on this forum said I was risking my rays, but the Mbu behaved like a lamb. I only had to watch out during feeding. If food fell on the ray, the puffer could bite the ray by mistake. This happened a couple of times, but only left faint marks on the ray. Usually I hand feed, so I avoided this problem. I don’t recommend others to keep these fish together as there is a risk, but for me it worked out just fine.
