Small update on project 400

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great looking project ethics, it looks like it is coming along very well. Your aros will be so happy:headbang2 . I don't mean to be objective but looking at the system I am wondering if you have enough pump rate, I don't think the overflow design can keep up with the 2000+ gals/hr rate that is required. I don't mean to rain on your parade, and I could be out to lunch, but remember your are looking to turn the water in your tank over about 5 times an hour.

Best of Luck,

the overflow of 1.5" holes are designed to flow more then 2500gph. remember there is 2 holes not 1. i am currently turning the tank over 5x per hour at about 2,000gph. this tank really moves. i never had a tank with this much flow. only thing im concerned about is the electric bill on heating n the pump on this tank.

so far its sitting at 82* with 1 buttikofri n 2 oscars. has some rocks n a huge flowerpot that looks tiny in this tank lol. this is honestly the biggest tank i've seen/owned in person n it feels nice. everyone in town wants to check it out cuz they all know me for the fish keeping kid in the area.

update pics comin soon, this tank came a long way n im still working on it as well as the room it sits in. after a nice clean up, water, rocks, lights, filter, fish. this tank looks awesome.

nice set-up. a DIY wet/dry is the way to go (saving some $$$ for monster fish). Does it make a lot of "niagara falls" sound? if it does i would put a plug on the T-pipe and drill a 1/8" hole, same concept on breaking the siphon just lowering the noise it produce. My only suggestion for you it to get a new cover for the drain, it seems to me it is splashing water and this can soak your stand or floor, it can create a big mess in the long run. go to a homedepot and get a soudering-Iron and use it to melt the plastic, this way it would be a clean cut and precise way. or get a smaller cover and cut it with 1/4" clearance on the pipe's diameter and place it on top of the existing cover. hopefully you got the concept.:)

thanks for the idea. the tank is noisy as crap but not from the overflow pipe vents. its from the 2ft drop after that T into the diy sump and damn does it sound like a waterfall. diy wetdry is the only way i woulda went with this tank... reasons being:

2 fx5 = 500$ alone... not including powering 2 fx5's on a daily basis
powerheads
proper filter media n filter padding

diy wet/dry:
10 bux for 2 17gal bins for all the media
40 bux worth of pot scrubbies to fill both containers
10 bux for a 50gal container
10 bux give or take for the pvc piping n fittings
40 bux for a 2000gph pump

one of the main reasons this tank was possible. without a diy filter, i'd still be sittin with an empty tank saving up for a fx5 of some sort. any idea on how to quiet the downfall of these overflows? those are whats so damn noise lol

and the splashing doesn't really bother me. im gonna try to reduce the splashing but the stand is made of aluminum and the floor is dead concrete cuz the tanks in my garage.
