Smartest of them all???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lots of possible candidates, i keep a lot of the large personable fish, oscars, peacock bass, gulper cat, lungfish, barramundi, big cats etc...

But in my honest opion it would have to go to the Giant freshwater pufferfish tetraodon mbu (and other larger species of puffers, fresh and marine) ive got one myself around 5" and we have a 20" one at work. Both are so intelligent, recognise people, very curious fish that just seem to learn

not for aquaria for sure but black bass are almost problem solving skill clever. They can remember the lures they've encontered over the years, and they look for fishing patterns. That and their escapes are often well planned - such as which log will cut a line and which ones smooth. SMB would get my vote for just smartest FW fish period.

Everyone keeps saying recoginising their owner is smart, in this case my Barramundis must be smart 8D, they come to the front of the glass whenever I walk in the room. They aren't at the handfeeding stage yet, but the other night I got so close 8)

Freshwater pufferfish and mormyrids.

Did you know that the tree shrew has the largest brain-to-body ratio of any vertebrate? they have 10% of their body weight dedicated to their brain.

but do they eat out of other people hand or just its owner? :grinno:

umm, to be honest i dont think approachable fish = smart fish. in the natural case its actually the far opposite. lol

if your predator baby son is cunning and lures your "smart" oscar in with a pellet etc, then STRIKES it unsuspectingly with his lego spear and punctures the swim bladder, much like a hydroculus, then grabs it out of the water with his highly evolved plastic T-rex trigger-stick grabby toy and takes it to the toilet to flush it for fun... true story.

i'd say there are MANY fish that are very intelligent...generally the cichlids.
out of the ones ive kept....i have too many to name.

I would say an MBU Puffer... lots of keepers seem to say they are extremely friendly...

Extremely friendly if that's what its personality is. Puffers comes in all kind of personality, I've seen mbu that has a personality of a fahaka. Straight cold blood killer...so in this case, puffers is kind of out of the list. Too many varities and its all random of finding out your puffer personality.

But with results from other forums. The Oscar is the winner as people say they can be hand trained to jump out of the water to grab food, or to just slowly come up and take it off your hand while your finger is submerged in the water without biting or even touching you, or trained to do both. Not only that, if lucky...your oscar will recognize its owner very well and will only come to the tank to look if its owner, and if it is...it will dance for food and follow you around and stare at you all day as long as it see's you. If not, it would ignore and go back into its business and won't even bother touching the food from someone else trying to feed it(unless its live...which is cheating in my opinion)
Also, Oscars have mood swings. They can be happy, sad, depress, and angry perhaps. Coloration, and movement of the fish tells it all. You can test it yourself with its food or finger. :p

With that being said, these are the results and reason that I get off other forums. Just like to share with you all, maybe I might plan to get me another oscar, I miss my old guy. Never tried to trained it. Also known as...water dog, a fish that is just like having a dog...instead its in your tank and you can't walk it. :D

i would have to agree with elephant nose, and large cats. i have never had a GG. but have you guys seen the video of the archer fish that spits water at a match and then its owner feeds it. i thought that was a very cool learned response. its on youtube :)
