snail infestation

if you are going to attempt manual control over the snails .... get a cheap wall paper applicator or coarse sponge and wipe the glass clean of the eggs. Rub your fingers along any plants and crush those eggs.

Other than that ... you need a snail predator. Assassin snails are good but don't make a qick dent. Puffers.. yes .. snails are their natural diet... as with some other fish.

BTW too much snail food = too many snails. Is the tank over stocked? Are you feedeing too much? there are so many variables

also by comparison to other fish puffers (espically DPs) are slow moving. they do have teeth but to kill another fish ... a DP??

I may be wrong and am waiting conformation.....

a clown loach will easily take them all out

I would very stongly recommend that you DO NOT get a single clown loach. They are a shoaling fish and will get anxious/depressed if they don't have any friends. You would need to get a minimum of 5 clowns for them to be happy.

Yoyo loaches are a much better idea IMHO. They're much less susceptible to ich (whitespot) and you only need to get 3 for them to be happy since they are relative loners (compared to clowns).

sometimes they can be picky eaters.

If you crushed a snail and soaked it in a garlic puree that may help. Avoid the cone shaped snails (MTS & Assassins). Pond snails, ramshorns are best.

Another cause for the bloodworm feast MAY be an overgrown beak. Thus preferring soft foods.

You can over filter the hell out of a fish tank and still get snails as long as they have a food source. Diatoms, BGA and over feeding the fish already in there.

If you have all that under control, you snails will be stunted, small and wont last past a few generations.

Or you could just pick them out and mail them to me. Pete, my gsp puffer love-em right out of the box:popcorn:!

My clown loach cleaned up my snail problem in no time every morning there would be a pile of shells by his cave. Getting them out of the filter took time

The easiest way to get rid of snails is to get a piece of lettuce, and weight it down with a rock. Do this after the lights are out.Wait an hour or so,then remove the lettuce with the snails. You will have to do this for a few days,or weeks, depending on how bad the infestation is.

Then, stop overfeeding your fish. The best way to know if you are overfeeding or not,is by the amount of snails in a tank.If you have ramshorns, pond snails, or MTS,the population will explode if you are overfeeding.

After you have them under control, you can start plucking them out as you see them.

Adding another fish,or snail to help with population control is a bad idea.It will add to the bio load. And if you get some assassins, what are you going to do with them when all the snails are gone? Loaches need to be in schools. Puffers are aggressive. Not a good plan,IMO.

Chemicals, another poor choice IMO. Do you really want to put something in your tank designed to kill things? I would not want to add poison to my tank, even if it is supposed to just kill snails. Sounds kind of risky to me.

The bait and remove is the best method IMO. You won't get rid of them overnight,it will take awhile. And you will probably never get rid of them for good. But it will get their numbers under control, and make them more manageable.
