^yep. dont have a choise.

and wiggles, gar arnt really considered game fish. So if we run across any little guys we can grab them. i do believe they are native though.

We where using 30lb braided test, with popper and buzz baits. they would hit them but getting a real good hook was alittle difficult. but those where mostly protective bites as they had fry already. We found a large pair guarding fry. it was pretty sweet. interesting to watch. Infact the only fish that we landed was a fry that got hook through the stomach when tryin to get the parents to bite

Well if gars aren't considered to be game fish, then I guess there shouldn't be a problem with getting them. The map I was looking at when I made my previous post about the gars was a bit flawed now that I look at it again; I found a better one that shows that they do naturally occur there.

We'll have to try crankbaits this time; they work pretty good on getting smallmouth bass away from their nests in my pond, so they might work on the snakeheads, too. I've caught several just by casting off to the side of the nest and slowly reeling the crankbait away from it. We might have to see about netting some of the fry for use as bait for other fish during the trip.

I live in Northern Va. I own a boat and fish the Potomac River and almost all of it's tributaries. I've been catching Northern Snakeheads for 3 years now, also know many other seroius fishermen here. Nobody has cought any Northern Snakeheads here 33". Sorry but, the original poster is a . If you guys want to know how and where to catch them, I can tell you where (bank or boat fishing). The biggest I've seen was 28".

i dont see the point of making it a law to kill them. nowadays, they r practically everywhere and impossible to get rid of anymore

I think the law is to mainly to prevent people from transporting them to other locations where they may eventually be released/escape.

Indeed, they are probably here to stay, so they should just be left where they currently occur, but I still believe transport of live snakeheads beyond where they are now should be prohibited. I also believe that the snakehead species that can't survive in some of the northern states (or even in the southern states) should be legalized, but that's an entirely different discussion.

man I wish i lived over there to start killin some.. I hope they dont get as bad as asian carp have over in the illinois river... all these people saying "dont kill them".... "they are gods creatures"... boohoo.. come take a ride on the illinois river and see what a invasive species can do to an ecosystem...

I don't think that snakeheads will get as bad as the Asain carp. I'm pretty sure that part of the hype about their invasive nature is their ability to cross short spans of land in order to get to new water. Well, that and their extremely vicious temperament when it comes to guarding their young.

thats how you get them to bite!! torment thier fry!!! WOOT!!

lol. i was thinking about grabbing my mini bow and an arrow and giving that a try. lol.

dunno if thats legal though

I don't know what to tell you on that one other than email or call the Fish Commission and ask. It's probably legal since they are an invasive species that we have to kill when we catch them anyway.
