Snakehead Legality

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
SHs are illegal in New Hampshire (and every other state) because of federal regulations, not state. The ONLY state where SHs are legal is Maryland. HOWEVER; the only legal SHs are the smaller tropical species. Also, federal law still prohibits ANY trafficing of any SH across state lines. This means that the only small tropical species of snakeheads that are legal in Maryland are those already within Maryland's state lines since the federal ban.

Doesn't matter if the info is still pertinent to our membership. We have plenty of members that have yet to see this thread since our membership was less than 1/10th of our current numbers back when this thread was started.

If this is true, are there anyone here in MFK that lives in MD that has a snakehead? just wondering. (or maybe just pm me)

Yeah I asked about them yesterday before I saw this thread and got yelled at. I was unaware that they are illegal. I had one in CA back in '95 and had it till 2000. Ive even seen them fore sale as recent as '06 but didnt have room for it. If the ban IS ever lifted, would it be posted here? Any idea if that is even being discussed?

There are people all over the U.S. that still own snake heads - the cobra redline's are becoming more and more scarce due to the huge media scare over them a few years ago.

Honestly - the giant redline's should be illegal, they're hyper aggressive and can cause serious harm to human's trying to keep them - not to mention they grow to a size that requires an enourmous tank.

All the other species were somewhat demonized as a result of the media coverage - though they aren't the same fish by any means. The obscura's are especially beautiful.

If you dig around deep enough you can find anything you want, it's just a question of morality and responsibility on your part. Are you willing to keep an illegal fish, and if so do you have an understanding of how devastating they can be to your region if you ever released them.

If any fish ban is ever lifted, we'll announce it as soon as the information is verified. Just don't count on the federal SH ban to be lifted anytime soon. Ever since the fed ban, more and more states have relisted SHs as illegal instead of restricted. The blanket reason is "Detrimental to the environment and other species". Sux but, that's how it is. I miss keeping my asiaticas and micropeltes back in the day.

For dirty-Id keep a micro again if there was a permit I could get. Not looking to get fined. I live in the desert with two man made lakes so there arent any "native" species here. Only what is stocked.

Oddball-Thanks for the info. Ive only been on for two days and I see you everywhere. Youre awsome!!! I guess Ill look into Bowfins. ;)
