WHY IN THE HELL WOULD aNYONE want to own a snakehead? It was bad to bring them over here because stupid people are releasing them in the wild and they are a huge environment problem. THey jump up on boats and attack you :(

Why in the hell do people keep fish full stop?? I have had a fair few snakehead and ok some grow big and some a less tolerable to each other /other fish/people but don’t badge all as "Boat jumping killers." It like the old saying so what was the problem with the gun? It’s the nut behind the stock.. its not the fish its the keepers. We don’t have this worry in England as a good summer here would kill a wild snakehead but give it time with global warming these are one tough cookie. I have seen one go back into a tank dried up and come back to life Dwarf snakehead are a great fish pretty and relatively easy to bread.

Stotty, Channa argus survive Moscow (the Russian one) winters, I don't think Old Blightey would bother them much.

I think, but don't know, that the Lacey act has been up dated to prohibit transfers even within states, it is hard to find reliable info on this, many sites are contradictory and although at least 25 states now have state regulations prohibiting ownership I can't find a list of which ones. It is a bit frustrating.

A point well made there are a few snakeheads that hibernate and you have to turn the temperatures down for them I have also heard of Channa argus surviving in lakes covered with ice we shall keep this to our self’s as we don’t want them banded here as well :naughty:

A statement well pointed out, Stotty! There are few species that do go thru cold periods... (seasonal monsoon climate changes)... and alot of people are really unaware of this... keeping such a speciman, in a tank that is 80-82+ degrees, all year round... simply is just not healthy for it at all?!! :uhoh:
And, speaking of able to survive in frozen ice water lakes... I beleive Channa maculata can also survive and tolerate similar cold temp. waters, as well... just like it's "commonly mistaken sp." relative, Channa argus. :)

Snakeheads are freshwater fish that would not venture into brackish or salt water. They are capable of living out of water for days But as Jelly said "that doesn't mean its the perfect conditions. its not that they don't like water changes"it like saying you can live in a 6ft squ. box but you would not choose too. Snakeheads cannot tolerate saltwater this will kill them fullstop.I have had a fair few of these fish and love them they are a true top-level predator

I thought they could live in either salt or fresh,..?

ikhan you don't have a clue. They are PURE freshwater, with less of a tolerance to salt than most other freshwater fish.

Snakeheads ugly? go to google and look up channa aurantimaculata and channa barca and channa bleheri just to name a few.

They are beautiful fish, and having owned a few snakeheads myself as well as many other predators they are HANDS down the most entertaining fish I have kept. Brilliant aquarium fish.

Vicious, amusing, and full of character. Very alert and responsive to their surroundings and their owner.
