A point well made there are a few snakeheads that hibernate and you have to turn the temperatures down for them I have also heard of Channa argus surviving in lakes covered with ice we shall keep this to our self’s as we don’t want them banded here as well :naughty:

You need a licence to own Argus in the UK.

Wonderful contribution -__-. I never said I had a clue thats why there is a question mark, and there are some ugly snakeheads. I just didn't realize there was a variety. ..SO...Snakehead Vs. Vamp tetra=?????
Course betta could take em both =P

A snakehead would annihilate a vampire tetra. Infact one of the members here - Vince - had a vampire tetra bitten in half by a channa.

And you didn't phrase it as a genuine question - you phrased it like "snakeheads suck, why would anyone wanna own one of these stupid fish".

The fact is snakeheads are magnificent predators, top of the line, and very fun fish to keep.

Tell me if you think this is ugly - personally I don't find any snakeheads ugly.

The photo is not mine, it's by CMD.

Another fact that people do not know is you Evil horrible ugle snakehead are from the labyrinth fishes or anabantids they have an organ called the labyrinth that enables them to breathe air In this group we find the Bettas (the Siamese Fighting Fish , the Gouramies (Pearl Gourami) and the Perch. So they come from a family of pretty fish i have kept fish for years so has my father he breads tetras and discus and also has a problem with his son keeping large cichlids and predatory fish but now he comes round to my house sits in my fish room and feeds them. Even the old man has warmed to my as he used to call them “big horrible fish”

They do have labyrinth organs but they are not anabantids. I looked into this myself sometime ago and found it not to be the case.

I do agree they are fantastic fish, I have moved from keeping CA Cichlids to Snakeheads and would never go back.

Well i would say it depends on the size....Vamp Tets will eat only what it knows it can fit in it's mouth, where as the snakeheads eat anything and it they can't fit it in it's mouth they will bite it in half and save the other half for later

WOW! thats a cool looking one! The pics I saw of the ones that were released in the wild were ugly though.

This is what we are trying to say not all snakeheads are these all brown things with teeth. There are some amassing colours and some amassing fish in the Channa gene. The big ones like Micropeltes (red) look divine as juveniles but loose all there red strip I still think they are a stunning fish when large but this is where people go wrong have a look at this site http://habitatnews.nus.edu.sg/guidebooks/freshfish/text/234.htm

Shows you a few more and shows young red and adult as I say Dwarf snakehead are great look nice and I even gave one to a friend who had it in a community tank all be it they were not small fish (mid sized Cichlids) the problem you get with the big ones are they can eat you out of house and home and tanks I had a 15” Snakehead in a tank on its own and it would eat a 2” Goldfish every day If you put 6 in it would eat all six within a few hours especially at night. The big ones are territorial. So if in your country or state you are allowed them I say “do it” get a Dwarf or to and you will never look back.
