found a checkered garter today, got him in my empty twenty
he eats misquito fish from the pond i found him by is this a good staple diet for him

They need amphibians to be the staple of their diet. Garter snakes on that diet seem to fare better than fish and earthworms.

amphibians are a nice snack but they don't have to be the main part of the diet. feel free to mix it up a bit, minnows, insects(worms & crickets) pinky mice, tadpoles and anything else you can get them to eat. what is your 20g setup like?

Then why all the garter and ribbon snakes that don't have amphibians as their staple diet look like they are suffering from serious health problems as they get older?

dude, i've never know a single person who's kept their snakes on a diet of amphibians. my guess is that they're feeding their snakes purely goldfish, feeder goldfish tend to be pretty nasty, also there might be a lack of UV light(they are a diurnal species)

my 20 gal its 2 parts land and one part water thats about 8 inches deep its a vivarium set up like a swamp

is the substrate dry? your garter will enjoy the water but if it doesn't have access to dry land then it will likely develop sores and fungus. with a 20g it would be better to simply have a large water bowl that to try a paludarium, in a tank that small all the land would likely get too wet.
