Pics I left in a forum gallery when my company relocated me from one state to another. The fish were legal where I bought them but, illegal where I moved to. Lost over $4k in fish, over $30k in crays, and was hit with over $60k in fines. $5k to a lawyer got me out of the fines due to a procedural error.

but Oddball - how on earth did the authorities find the pics? They just happened to stumble across your forum by chance, and realized the gallery was yours? :D

Oh and how bad is a bowfin? Are they the sort of preds that will kill stuff for sport, and rip something in half just for fun?

I guess the reason I love and own snakeheads is most of them live up to their reputation. Anything I put in with my striata, whether it's the same size or twice the size is going to get charged and ferociously attacked immediately.

.

These sites are monitored frequently by the authorities. My pics were in a gallery on one of these sites. When I updated my sig to show the new state I was living in, they contacted the site mods to get my IP addy. Then they got my billing info from my ISP.

I always thought it was merely illeagal to import an sell SHs, didnt think it was Illeagal to have 1 in your personal tank.

no offence. but I think your lying there are far to many little kids that go on these forums. I'm sure half of them say that they have or have had an asian aro or a snake head just to sound cool. Fish and game couldn't possibly go to everyone’s house to search over what you said in a thread. maybe if you said you were selling them and you mistakenly sold to an undercover. but just cause you said you had one... i don't buy it. they wouldn't have time to do anything else. I can post a picture in my gallery of whatever i want, doesn’t mean i actually own one. Hell if that’s the case I’m gonna upload a picture of maria carey... maybe she'll pop up in my bed room! again no offence, just to far fetched for me to accept. and I’m the sales manager of a car dealership, I get lied to all day long. I generally know one when I hear it.

that would take some incredibly close monitoring, like they were aware what fish you had, and were just waiting, rubbing their hands - for you to move to another state. That seems insane, I would not have thought they'd have the time to bother with that. Sounds absurd.

agreed. I have been in the court system far more times then i care to explane. they need more evidence to raid your house then a forum responce. i wish they would raid my house over something like that. i would own the police dept after i was done sueing the crap out of the city.

I have no reason to lie. But, thanks for inferring that I'm a kid since I was born in the 50s. And, it wasn't just one species of fish on their "list" when they showed up. Read the post. Almost $40K of animals was confiscated from my hatchery. The gallery pics showed alot more but, I cut inventory for the relocation.

BTW, the police don't serve the warrant. It's served by the attending F&W agents. Signed by a F&W judge. The police don't enter the picture unless you threaten the F&W agents. They didn't arbitrarily choose me as a private hobbyist. I was "inspected" under my business name RCCR.

There was an insinuation from other board members that an unhappy customer put a call in to the authorities. But, he denied it and I've never been able to find proof of this. I couldn't dig too deep past the "our sources are confidential" spiel I received.

Okay, this topic was discussed some time ago by staff, it was decided that with the current attitude and legal climate concerning snakeheads and asian aros MFK could not condone or encourage the illegal transfer of these fish or indeed any other species in areas that are banned.
The current policy is to close the thread. We also tend to point out possible consequenses.
Most people who get busted over things like this are caught because they are involved in cross border smuggling, The FW people use word filters to alert a small staff to suspect forum traffic, if it seems to warrant it or edges on a larger investication they watch closer or even set up a sting. Importers and dealers are especially vulnerable.
It was several years ago that the individual in San Francisco got busted with piranha, here is the story of how it happened as best as I know. He had been popped before for RBPs and a FW stingray and recieved a small fine and lost the fish, that was due to an estranged girlfriend calling the Ca. F+W. Then he got a few more RPBs from someone in Sacramento who was also involved in importing asian aros. That person got bustedin a sting and gave up his customer lists to the feds. They turned over the info they did not need to the state. Both the state and city served a warrant and ended up confiscting tanks, equipment, and all the fish in the house, even the legal ones. In court the owner was fined several thouisand dollars but part of the fine was deferred. He was banned from owning a fish tank of any kind for 2 years as well. Violation of that order would result in reinstatement of the fines and contempt of court charges. He was busted almost accidently but nonetheless he was busted.

Any way here it is again...,
MFK does not, and cannot, support, condone, or encourage, the trafficking in species that are illegal. Any thread found to be offering such sales will be closed.
