Snapping turtle

hm...:) little cutie...be careful, it might bite you..it can weigh to several pounds or kilos if you keep it in your own pond. It like to eat fish and meat, sure its growth can be faster if you give it different kinds of foods on different time.
 
They grow FAST. In 7 months, my snapper has a 5 inch shell.. He will probably be 6 to 7 inches by the time he hits one year old! They are life long pets so be ready to dump money into a LARGE enclosure, big filtration, and uvb bulbs every 6-12 months. You also have to consider the electric bill and feeding him. I feed my guy pretty much everything meaty. Earth worms, shrimp, beef chunks, chicken, turkey, etc. Sometimes I give him trout pellets and mullet. They are sick pets but Dont hand feed them. My guy thinks that my fingers mean food now when my fingers are in the water.. So he tries to go after them. But hes tame out of the water. Good luck with him. They are really awesome pets!
 
I've got a female CST that I have had for a little over ten years. As they mature they become pretty much 100% aquatic - I stopped trying to make a basking area years ago as she would invariably destroy it. They do need a lot of room as they are pretty active for a turtle. Be sure you hold it properly when it gets bigger, as they have an amazingly long and flexible neck and will snap. Make sure there is nothing they can swallow in the tank. I learned the hard way when she tore a 6"x5/8" piece of vinyl tubing off of a filter and cost me a $650 vet bill to have it removed....
 
I caught a brand new hatchling out of my pond a couple months ago I got bashed so hard for keeping it and he or she grew really fat and about .5-1" uploadfromtaptalk1368660427119.jpg
Going to release it back into my pond when it grows a little more as its not a threat to my fish yet as they could probably swallow him.

feed it meat and it depends on whether it is an alligator snapper or a common snapper in terms of legality

There is a lot of good info in this thread, but the above quote could not be further from the truth. A 50 gallon breeder is WAY too small for a full grown adult. I have my 2 year old albino common snapper in a 75 gallon right now and it is almost time to upgrade....and he is FAR from full grown. The cheapest way to house adult snappers is with a poly stock tank like in this link.....http://www.southernstates.com/catalog/p-10159-southern-states-poly-tank-round-335gal.aspx...but you need LOTS of room in your house, obviously. And a ton of powerful mechanical filtration is a must...these guys are messy eaters and messy poopers...lol.
