Every time I see these fish at LFS here it makes me really want one -- but at least at this point in my life I don't see ever having the ability to really provide them with the proper home they would need.

Gorgeous fish.
I wonder, living in Thailand, have you not had a chance to set up a tropical pond? Thailand was the place that revived my fish keeping interest some years back when I want on holidays. I loved that country. Maybe I will go there one day for good.

I don't think that it would be affordable to feed unless you could train it to eat disfavored local poilticians.

Yep, my LFS away from home 
Every business trip to BKK has to incl. a stop there, in fact I spend more time there than LFS on the island. And yeah besides the gar those were some lovely parrots, they've got them looking like slender koi nowadays.

Same, every trip I will go down to chatuchak... and if I see anything I like... will come back on day of leaving bkk to get it packed
