Thanks so much but i buy the garden fence can u see through it? Won't he be trying to constantly escape? I read that on one of the care sheets don't know how true it is.

Okay so the key is to let the turtle think he can escape. I'll go out n buy a pen for him tomorrow. And my mom has bunnies hopping around the yard turtles and bunnies don't have any rivalry right? Seems like a silly question... I only ask because my mom own trying to breed them and might keep the baby's in the pen with the turtles or should I Tell her to get her own pen? I plan on making this quite a big pen though prob 8x8

I personally wouldn't keep them together. The rabbits are likely to eat all the plants in the pen and possibly dig tunnels out.

Seems you have a turtle and hare problem :-P

OP I give you credit for working to provide it an appropriate habitat. Seems you're on the right track just keep listening to those who have experience with them :)

My cousin bred ornate box turtles for years and would put hers in the garage around October and after a while move them to the refrigerator in a nice little cardboard box. Then around march they were back in the garage to start warming up then by about the end of April they would be back to their outdoor pen. She was in sw Colorado when she was doing that and still has the turtles now in socal, still doing the same thing to hibernate them. I have a 4x4' outdoor pen I want to put a box or sideneck turtle in so this thread is helping me too.

Trying to give a box turtle a cooling period by using a refridgerator is very risky if you don't know what you're doing. I would NOT recommend this unless you have a great deal of experience with turtles.

Heading to petco to pick up a 8x8 pen and modify it so he can't see out of it. I'll post pics it will look like fish's with a spin on it. And i will be picking up some earthworms , a water tray, , something to dig in and shelter.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say you've got a Desert Box Turtle, Terrapene ornata luteola. While rarely found there, they are native to southern CA. They're typically found in the Sonoran Desert in AZ and Mexico but box turtles are terrible when it comes to obeying lines on maps. You should let it go. That box turtle will home in on where he came from and get back there. It will not be difficult to find a cheap CBB turtle or tortoise to keep in your yard in southern CA.

Yes but he wouldn't survive in my neighboorhood^ all cement though.

For now: uploadfromtaptalk1345084005369.jpg

I didn't bother trying to feed him yet. I tried berries with no luck PETCO didn't have any earthworms could I start with meal worms dusted with calcium. Oh also his cage size will double soon I just want to get him to eat first and comfy before I make his cage bigger.
