So confused. Why is it so wrong to visit a fish warehouse?

Thats not a fish warehouse...

It's where 2pac is hiding until 2014.

I stopped at a fish place and there were two guys seated the front desk. I saw a warehouse full of saltwater fish behind them and asked if I could have a look. They were extremely taken aback, as if I'd asked permission to take my pants off. I quickly assured them (blindly offering hope) that I was just a hobbyist with no tricks to pull. I just wanted to see the specimens at hand. At that, they were relieved a bit and let me wander, though still watching me. As I left, I received a polite but stiff goodbye. The kind of goodbye that says, "Nothing personal, but please don't come in here again!"
So what is the mystery here? Are they afraid of people poisoning their fish? Discussing filtration methods? Afraid the customer will be let down by the lack of bells and whistles? I just don't get the secrecy yet. Please tell me, if you are a fish dealer, why customers aren't allowed into your fish holding area.
First, you're not their customer. Second, how would you react when some stranger just came and ask if he can "tour" your place? Consider you were lucky that they let you tour their place! ;)

I agree that its more like due to bio-security and not wanting to risk losing large amounts of stock due to one person, or even a group of people doing something to their tanks and killing everything...

Now imagine if every one started brining their kids, and random friends/family to these places with them who know nothing about these places to start poking and prodding around their tanks and in the water how many problems that might cause for the owners then...

Although i have to admit, i'd still love to check out some of these places if i ever get the chance...

thats probably it, at work I'm not allowed to show customers the wholesale list because of how low some of the prices are

same they told me never let this leve the desk

I think it's more then one reason. People are not even let with in a mile near a turkey or chicken farm because of Bio-security. When animals are kept in a closed system and over stocked things spread like wild fire in the wind.

Then the money thing and the fact no one ever just walks in and asked to look around. I'm sure it was really weird to them you wanted to look around.

The answer is several fold.

First and foremost, we all understand wanting to see masses of fish. What a lot of you guys don't get are the hundreds of people against keeping fish, and don't have to deal with the stuff they pull to either kill off or 'set free' captive animals. Letting in a random person off the street isn't smart at all.

Secondly, a lot of them to want to keep their business private. They deal with stores on a professional level. Letting people see the price difference is stabbing the store owners in the back, and very rude on a professional level.

Coming in off the street, they have no clue who you are. All it would take is a bottle of liquid dish soap in you pocket to wipe them (and the staff who works for them) out.

They weren't being rude, they were being safe.

I'm more curiuos about the ones, such as a dealer on Aquabid...saying "Pickup not an option".

I think, that if I am interested in a fish that is in the same town as me, I'm gonna get P.O.'d if they want me to pay overnight air to get it...

I have never heard of somebody without a license being able to visit a large wholesaler. Their products aren't supposed to be available to the general public
