I have a 1200 pond

What are the dimensions. Well it's good hat you already have the pond, I'd say maybe 2-2.5 years in a 300...I haven't kept RTCs though so I couldn't tell you.

300 gal on average will last ~1 year; 1.5 year will start hurting the (~2'-2.5') fish - it is sedentary only in too-small tanks; otherwise it loves to swim and cruise!

1200 gal can be ok til 2 years

Adult RTC is ~2' tall and ~4' long, so final depth should be 4' at a bare min, better more. I'd imagine a 20'-25' round by 6' deep pool would be ok.

This is not a solid science. It all depends on YOUR research and who you (wisely) choose to believe.

I choose to believe these guys (lots of links in each to consider carefully, if one wills):

Fish that should no longer be available in the commerce, imho. As several others.

Not wanting to rain on OP's parade, obviously.

This is a 3.5' RTC in a 2000 gal. I've seen this fish great many times in person. The fact that it prefers to swim in one spot vertically against the glass says it has not enough space: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...8862-Close-to-4ft-Red-Tail-plus-Niger-and-TSN as an example of a good but still wanting attempt.

In properly sized Public Aquaria, these fish cruise around their big tanks like submarines, day or night. Never vertically.
