So I am getting a 3 inch red tail catfish

Looks like I have not worded it clearly. I've been seeing this fish and its RTC tank mate of the same size (who was killed by chlorinated water accident recently) for years. I've never seen them swim around "like subs". Always either sedentary on the bottom or vertically / semi-vertically against the front glass in one spot.

Hence, I used the word "prefers". Coupled with the prior sentence, it meant prefers "all the time", not "for this moment". You are right, it'd be utterly silly to generalize from one snapshot.

I am glad your 3'-ers are doing great in a less than 2000 gal. But IMHO, exceptions exist to any rule (of thumb or not) and they do not deny the rule.

What are the dimensions of your tank, Mayo? I've seen the photos and threads but do not recall the size.

Ahhh, sorry think i may have misunderstood you then :)

sad to hear 1 passed :(

as for mine i previously grew out in a 8x3x2.2 (LxWxH) glass tank but now they have a 8x5x2, 600gal at max level each, on the way is a 12x7x3 1887Gal in the hope i can house multiple together, id like to hear on other peoples experiences in housing multiple rtc's together

In my 40'x6'x3' 4000 US gal I had a hundred different fish, including up to 5-6 RTCs at one time, none much bigger than 2' though. RTCs never caused any concern whatsoever, not counting the attempts to ingest non-edible objects.

Holy $h!t man, where could you fit a tank that big, my house isn't even as long as that tank!

I remeber seeing that pond of yours :)

Nice! good to know they got along as i will be trying it once i can actually get hold of some more

Honestly these fish get huge. But people just love to exaggerate the size. Like a guy at my fish store was trying to tell me that red tails get 4.5 foot and they get 70 pounds in aquariums. What the heck?!? You do not need a 25x20 foot tank. A 12x5 should last a LOOONNNGGG time.

Other then the guy above with the 40 foot tank or whatever who has even attempted AT LEAST a 12 foot tank for their RTC???

Just my 2 cents.

And i agree that they should be special import only.

Im not agreeing with you. Alot of people buy these fish, and dont house them properly, it dosnt make it right. A red tail catfish needs a huge tank, or pond, just because people cant house them, you cant change that..

I will house him in a pond next year when it gets 2 feet
