Anyone else keeping these? I haven't kept them in years (had a pair before, they bred a few times but didn't have space to separate babies, then eventually female outgrew and ate the male). I saw them at my lfs, $40 a pair, and bought the 2 largest ones. They've settled in well, and are launching themselves at feeders. These things are the hardest to get to accept non-living food, but I'll get it done again (eventually).

Anyone else keeping these?

i saw them for the 1st time a few days ago. my LFS has about 20 of them for 10 bucks a piece

sweet lookin fish.

how big do they get?

pick some up, that's a great price! Males top out at about 5-5.5", females about 8-9". A planted 35g is fine for a male and 2-3 females, they're quite inactive. Just make sure the male doesn't fall behind in the growth... at adult sizes, males are safe from females, but I've noticed females tend to grow a bit faster, and will predate on the smaller male if the opportunity arises..

They very seldom take to non-living food, they prefer fish but also take small earthworms, shrimp, crickets, and other moving fish. Easy to breed, just keep in a well planted tank, very adaptable but like the addition of just a little salt (1-2 tbsp/5 gallons will do though they can even adapt to full salt). A 55g is ideal for breeding but it can be done in as small a tank as a 20g. They can breed as often as once a month producing up to 100 live young about 1/2" at birth. The young will be eaten if caught by adults. They will feed on baby guppies as soon as they are born. If you raise them many MFKers will buy them.

I just picked up a pair too :).
