Remember, a tank with lots of clumps of plants is prefered with these guys, elodea works nicely. They settle down much more quickly that way.
 
btw, what size bowfin are you looking for? Around springtime, I can get them @ around the 10"-1' mark...

Any size, but that would be perfect...
 
I found some in NOVA. Went to the LFS today and saw maybe a dozen of these little predators for $15. Would you guys get a few of these or a couple red high fin wolves??? Hopefully they will still have some by the time I'm ready to pick some up. They said they had just got them in.

Get the belonesox. Red wolves kill each other off...

Belonesox it will be then sir. How do you sex these guys? I might have to take a shot at breeding to share of course.
 
We just got some of those in, must be becoming more available right now.

Female top, male bottom, look at the anal fins. Same way you'd sex guppies/mollies/platys;

Depends on the species. Things like blue acaras, severums, uaru, etc. they should be fine with. More aggressive cichlids will probably end up harassing them to death.
