Because they're kept in small tanks. The old saying 'fish grow to the size of their environment' may seem absurd, but it does have some truth to it.

In my opinion their growth just slows down a lot. I have seen way too many fish in real crappy fish stores with the bent spines and everything to believe fish grow to their tank size. But I definitely see what you are saying. But in no way would I try to keep a kelberi in a 29 gallon for life hahahaha.

I might try and do a kelberi lifer in a 36 gallon :ROFL:JK.

fish max size depends on a lot of factors, including, food, temperature, water volume, genetics, etc.

Rainbow trouts for instance, the ocean going anadromous ones get over 50 pounds, and the ones in creeks stay about 10-12" less than 2 pounds, both can breed, live happily and healthy.

Tanganiykan cichlids are the same way, get much larger in aquariums since we feed more and higher protein diets. In the wild, many graze on algae will stay relatively smaller and thinner, doesn't mean they're unhealthy.

generally, like temensis, we see get to 20" max or so in the aquarium, not much more. but when given larger tank, like JohnPTC, his are over 30" probably. rarely do they get to the 20-30 pounds like they do in the wild.
