Try contact AE Aquatics, see if they will be able to get ruby red spilo for you.

Would it be possible to do a group of elongatus in a 125gal, then move them to the 300gal as they grow? Or will it just be a disaster? If it was to 'work', how large would the group have to be?

What would be the average price range on one Serrasalmus geryi should I be able to find one?

So answer me this, why are there so few or no 12" + manuelli in the hobby? They seem like a popular fish, do they just die before they get too large?

 
Geryi's are probably the hardest piranha to find for me at least. I searched the net with nothing.

They just opened the store front so probably why they don't have that many in inventory yet. doesn't hurt to contact them to see if they are able to get you one via special order.
really no idea how well an elong cohab would turn out in your size tank, i've never done it myself and from what I read most of the people that tried it didn't end good, but again, I don't think anyone tried it in 300g. you just have to suck it up and try it out yourself.
I don't think there's any geryi being imported to the US recently, if anyone selling then most likely are private owners or someone traded it in to a lfs or lfs has one from long time ago and price tag was way to high.
as for manuellis, they don't handle stress as good as other piranhas, so pretty much all the large fish don't make it here alive and vendors just stop trying to import them, they will just bleed out cash if a big one doesn't make it.
you can get a small one and grow it out in 125g first then move to 300g. there's one guy grew a baby out and it's in a 250g now by itself, probably around 12" or something like that now.
 
if you can hunt down a shoal of geryis or a manuelli of any size, you're already a step ahead of 90% of this forum. I'd hate to see you waste money on any experiment but best of luck with whatever you go with
 
I wouldn't start with a shoal of geryi right off the bat unless you have money to burn. The last one I saw was 2 years ago at my LFS 9 inches for 500 bucks. Branti would be awesome for a solo smaller tank and not too hard to find if you keep looking. Mannies have this weird habit of dying in captivity for apparently no reason, especially larger ones, so large ones are not too common.

Any serra shoal will most likely end in disaster unless you get really lucky. You have the most chance with sanchezi or macs in a shoal. I still think it might be best to start with a mixed shoal to get used to P shoals and the constant chance of waking up with one less fish then the day before lol...

So the problem with mannies is they are delicate at larger sizes, at least during shipping huh? Are all larger piranhas like that, or just especially so with mannies?

If I were to get a 4-5" mannie, what kind of growth rate can I expect to get from it? I'm used to Crenicichla that grow about 1" a month when feed good. Is that the same for piranha? Or do some species grow faster than others?

I'm almost tempted to divide up my 125gal into three parts and get one mannie, one elongatus, and one ruby red spilo. That would be pretty cool for sure. :)

DrUgS ~ What do you mean by start with a mixed shoal? Like of just red bellies? Go into more detail please, I still have sooo much to learn.
 
piranhas don't grow fast after hitting certain size, never kept manny before but I would think it's similar with rhom, grow relative fast to 6-7" (within a year or so) then slow down to around 1" a year.
125g isn't that big of a tank (2ft length for each fish), if you get them small then you can divide the tank but as they get larger you'll need to put them in bigger tanks. can probably keep the elong and ruby red in 125g divided for a long time (3ft for each fish, but 4ft length for each fish would be better as they get bigger, nice power heads in there would help). and the manny go into a big tank by itself. it doesn't handle stress too well, the stress from being in a divided tank may not do good to it.
 
Alright, so that makes it easy. Mannies are out. I might be moving in the next year or two, and would hate to loose my fish I get attached to because it got too stressed out or something. Oh well.

I wish there were some caribe for sale, I'd give them a go I believe. :) As it is though, the elongatus and ruby red spilos are looking more and more attractive. :)
