I cleaned my tank before I left to work and tried some Melafix to see if it will help one of my Oscars with it's hole in head disease. I get a call while I'm at work that the fish started to go belly up. I had my fiance do a water change to try to dilute what ever was in the water but I guess it was to late. I never used that stuff before but I will never use it again.:swear:

hmm. strange, never had a problem with the stuff, in fact it's always produced great results on torn fins.

Melafix is only good for minor wounds and abrasions to prevent infection taking hold, not a full blown case of hole in the head. I would bet that Melafix was not the cause of your oscars death, more likely the holes in its head. The stuff is amazing if you use it for minor stuff and to prevent infection/fungus from setting in, used it for years without any problem at all.
However, like large wounds or infections on myself, herbal medicine goes out the window and traditional cures get used; i.e. waterlife's products.

I just got home and the Oscar's, I have two and Albino and a red, are still fighting. Not looking to good but still fighting for life as well as my firemouth. The only ones that died quickly were my school of Tinfoil barbs. And I think I may just have used too much of the Melafix. I'll just watch to see what happens in the next couple of days. If any survive then I'll just start again. If the four that are in there now make it it's just a matter of replacing the tinfoils.

Have you tested your water? I bet your nitrates are sky high and that's what caused all of this to begin with. Make sure you shake bottle #2 for at least 30 seconds before adding it to the vial that has the water and bottle #1 drops in it (mixed together.)

Shake the final concoction for 60 seconds, and wait 5 minutes to read your nitrates. Doing this test inaccurately, gives a "false negative."

I don't condone the use of any Pimafix or Melafix. Just gums up the water IMO. There are much more reliable medications out there to cure whatever problems you may have, up to and including pristine/clean water.

Sorry to hear about your Oscar but i guess the positive is you have a fiance that will do water changes for you. I dont think mine could feed my fish!

it happened to me once when I overdosed- some of the fish went belly up, I misread the directions as pimafix and melafix both have waaay different doseages per gallonage and I immediately did water change and added tons tons of aeration and they went back to norm. That was the only and last time I had an issue with melafix.
