Melafix is only good for minor wounds and abrasions to prevent infection taking hold, not a full blown case of hole in the head. I would bet that Melafix was not the cause of your oscars death, more likely the holes in its head. The stuff is amazing if you use it for minor stuff and to prevent infection/fungus from setting in, used it for years without any problem at all.
However, like large wounds or infections on myself, herbal medicine goes out the window and traditional cures get used; i.e. waterlife's products.

agreed

Hole-in-the-head is due to prolonged bad water conditions. Correcting the water condition may stopped the progression and may start to heal some over time. But if its bad it probably will never completely heal back but leave scars.
I know they sell medication for it. But IMO you just make it worse cause treating the water will mess with your biological filter making the water worse. I never heard of any medication that ever cured it.

If you use to much of that stuff you will effectivly suffocate your fish

Yep. See why I never really advocate the use of Melafix.

I would be more worrying about what caused the hith problem un the first place rather than pointing my finger at the melafix

I know that had to have been tough. I got my oscars very young and have watched them grow and now i'm very attached. But at least your thinking optimistically and like you stated, time for a fresh start. Wish ya the best of luck.

I would definitely class melafix as first aid for minor injuries, such as torn fins/missing scales/scrapes. It is akin to adding tcp to a cut on my finger, it prevents infection from setting in. Coupled with a good size water change before treatment and you are onto a winner for keeping infection from setting in.

I do agree that melafix, along with pimafix, are pretty useless when infection has set in and traditional medications are needed. Contrary to their advertising.

This is definitely the way to go. Consider the causes of the HITH first and work on fixing those. However, that can be difficult because as far as I am aware HITH has no official cause(s) that have been identified.
There are several suspects such as poor water conditions, poor nutrition, diseased feeders, vitamin deficiency, the constant use of carbon in filtration, stress, the parasite hexamita.
