You're right, we all jump to conclusion that it's being mistreated. Most of us don't even think about the other side of the story. Why is it so sad? A responsible owner brought it in for a donation or trade in and the pet shop is selling it. 40 gallon is plenty for a few days to weeks. You do understand it's a shop and everything in there is temporary.
If the owner was truly responsible he/she would not have brought the snapper in to a pet store where it will likely wind up being sold to someone who has no business having such a turtle. Why is it so sad? A turtle is a hard sell. Who really keeps turtles a small majority of people. Where I was trying to get at was the lfs did nothing wrong and is not treating the turtle wrong. If the owner was truly responsible he/she would not have brought the snapper in to a pet store where it will likely wind up being sold to someone who has no business having such a turtle.
Just wondering but do you know for certain that the turtle was handed over for free?....There is a shop here that gets large ones like that throughout the summer.I know because local kids catch them at various creeks and bring them to the store to be sold..same goes for the hapless baby RES,they all are bought by people who have no clue about proper care. The last ones I saw there were priced at one hundred dollars each but knowing those people I'm sure the price was not firm.A turtle is a hard sell. If the owner wasn't some what responsible trust me they would let it out in a pond. Heard this and seen this as well. It takes some effort to bring it in to a shop give it away for free and walk out.
