Trop fish answer doesnt work cause they always go "Oh yea what kind". Or you get the Oscar question so I have figured it out I say "I have alot of central and south american fish". If they persist then they are gonna get me to talking about my fish and I might not stop.

x2.. Or after you say CA/SA fish they say "saltwater?"

that's exactly what I say and drop the topic I hate explaining myself when the people don't understand or really care

Glad I'm not alone..that's how I feel..

"stuff that you've never heard of"

I try to avoid that type of conversation..most people do not understand....

Again I've learned not to but I used to explain to people all the time.. just confuses them though and they think you're weird because you know so much about fish. lol

Most of the time I avoid the subject. Or go, I have fish, they are this big. I actually got sick and tired of explaining every fish in detail to half the factory so I got some photos and put them on the message board, now I refer people to the photos. One guy I work with asks all the time, if I say a name of a fish that he doesn't know he gets me to write then name down a will actually research the fish at the library. Doesn't come back acting smart either, just wants to understand what I'm talking about, he's great a real rare non-hobbiest, loves my Oscars as well.
A lady where I work found out that I like fish and started ranting on about how much of a tyrant her male guppy is, always picking on her female. I said to get a couple more females and he wont seem so bad anymore. She told me if I drop him in my tank he will probably kill my fish :screwy:. I got her to come round and pick a fish that she wants to fight the guppy with, she soon changed her mind.

Cool... :)

So what do you tell co-workers, friends and family that are not hobbiests, and others who are not into fish when they ask.. "Oh what kind of fish do you keep?" "Koi??"

I find it hard because usually I could say the names but they wouldn't know what I was talking about anyways.. lol

i say i own collectors fish, if they ask what kind i say freshwater rare pre-hystoric predatory fish....:D

I just say "These are plecos, they are from South America".
(guest rolls eyes)
Then I say "Would you like something to drink?".

I usually say "What about feeders":D

the guys i work with think i'm nuts already because i have 9 LARGE dogs and 10 snakes (mostly kingsnakes), and 2 big lizards.. they just roll their eyes when i start talking about my animals. But when they have an issue with their dogs or pets i'm the first one they come to for advise.

i told them about the peacock bass, but i only tell them that they are peacock bass, and that i have 2 different kinds of peacock bass and i'm working on getting a 3rd kind.. but i don't give them the actual names, they don't care. I told Tony that i paid $40 for an arowana and he said fish should never cost more than $5.. and i'm stupid for paying that for any fish. So i quit telling him about my fish.. lol.
