So what is it about big fishes that appeal to you?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its to eaches own persona i like to call my fish the pitbulls in the living room when people come over they say what pitbulls and then they see the tank with the monsters and say ahhhh i get it yeah your right they are pitbulls lol

Big tank with small fish opens up all sorts of dynamics as well though. With multiple schools of different types of fish, you get to see more natural and interesting territorial behaviors.

My wife is always asking me why I don't have a school of "colorful" fish, rather than five large Dats in my 350. IMO, both are nice, but I prefer fewer larger fish. I would have to make the following points which are relevant to me:

1. With a fish, the presence, persona and "ability to relate" (whatever that means with a fish) becomes more tangible (for me) as the fish becomes larger. When the Dats were small, they were "interesting", but now that they're big, they seem more like puppies. In fact, I think of my 350 more like a kennel than an aquarium. So, presumably, we are talking about the enhanced ability of a human to relate at a quasi-personal level to another life form...Size matters.

2. I find that there is an enhanced sense of pride in viewing my tank now that the fish are larger. I suppose this has something to do with the feeling that I have met a technical challenge and succeeded to the extent that the fish have thrived and grown. After all, mainitaining water chemistry, diet, etc., to support a group of aquatic life forms is more intellectually challenging than cleaning a litter box. A few weeks ago, my sister-in-law was over and was marvelling at the size of my largest ST. I have to admit that my feeling was one of pride.

Anyway, that's sort of where my self-reflection takes me on this issue.

This is interesting. I have the exact opposite stocking in my 360. I have some Angles, Silver Dollars, and soon some Discus. Lately the focus of my attention is the bottom dwellers. In the evening when the house is quiet and the timer just turned on the moon lights, I pull up my chair close to the tank and watch. I have Weather Loaches, Cory Cats, and about 40 Kuli Loaches. At any given time I might see two Kuli's and then 10 minutes later there's another three and then ten Cory's will swim by. It's a complete time out from my regular day life. I feel the same "sense of pride" for being able to support a thriving community of these little fish.

I'm planning a thousand gallon tank to get this same feeling with some true "Monsters" :headbang2

big fish are a good excuse to have a big tank.

:ROFL::ROFL: Simcity, lol.

I just love their personality. Their like little children or something. The oscars are always coming up to the top and jumping around in the water. The GT constantly stares at me when I'm in the room. And the growout tank gets all whiney and scared when you scare them(aproach their tank too fast).

I just think I see their personality better with having a few large fish. If I had a few dozen small fish geesh I would not even be able to name them all let alone learn what is unique about each fish. Over the years I have had quite a number of large fish and even of the same kind they all act quite a bit different.

Plus I can sit on the couch from 15 feet away and still observe my big fish quite easily. I cant see that well for small fish.
