can you put a finger on it?

for me the best thing about fish keeping is breeding them. i rarely buy any species without a view to breeding it. the satisfaction of rearing fry and making profit is too good. (most of my tanks and fish are paid for by selling the fry of different fish, my set up costs me nothing but a little time)

i also really like the gasps when people see my GG, they are always amazed/impressed despite the whole 'fishkeeping, geeks and glasses' impression that people have

what is it that does it for you?

just to study behavor and to breed(or try) and hit and miss trys

I have a few factors... one I am fascinated by the way predatory fish hunt. I love the way a tank can change your house/apartment. It's a good converstion piece. every girl i ever brought home loved the fish. the sound of running water is calming (especially when you work with juvenile delinquents and are ready to kill something). it's fun to recreate an environment... it's like having a live version of the discovery channel in your living room. the fish are 100% dependent upon the owner, so when you start this hobby when you're young, you learn responsibility. fish are beautiful animals and are appealing to the eye.

:iagree:

I like the challenge of making sure the big rays and Aro's are properly looked after and the satisfaction of seeing them do well.
Being a techy type person I like the science behind the systems of life support.

Having an aquarium does reduces stress, but ask me again when there are problems in the tanks!!!! That raises the blood pressure somewhat.

I like water, I like fish, I like watching my fish, seeing what they do, what makes them so unique from other fish , how they breed, how they move certian things around and find certian spot that is there spot. Its also peaceful and calming to watch.

You have so many options with keeping aquariums. Big,small, fresh, brackish, salt. thousands of fish to choose from. Not too many hobbies can say that.

good answer... i thought of another reason. I see my tank as an "activity" sometimes. if friends or a girl come by, they love feedin the fish. I've had dates feed the fish and watch the tank for a good half hour... which isnt always a good thing, but my point is that it is something that you can interact with. It's something "different" to alot of people that arent exposed to something like that.
