Southern california has on average a fish store every 5-10 miles and there alot of wholesalers importing through LA. I never realized we had it so good:-)

with economy going like it is, lay offs, stuff like that youl be seeing even more tanks and set ups for sale. im betting the hobby has a 30-40 percent loss now. fish stores are closing cause people are buying used stuff at a steal! 135 new at store 200+ stand 200+ canopy125 + filters....................... craigslist everything 200 obo has 1 light scratch on glass but cant see when filled with water.... its nuts. those of us still working in cali are scoopin this stuff up! i wishcarring and enjoying wildlife was free for everyone. ask your tax man about your hobby credit! and yes there is such a thing =)

Yes, there is big money in other places, but Californians love to blow their money on stuff! And everyone has a hobby there.

Good thread,I've thought of this a few times myself....In my observation Philly seems to be slowly drying up as a hotbed, has been for some time actually. The best stores have gone out of business years ago and the hobbyists who probably would be into the monster sized tanks have either left the hobby or have scaled back due to other interests or obligations.

Do you guys think it has anything to do with Asian-American influence? Los Angeles has the biggest Asian-American population in the US, and it seems to be a pretty big hobby for Asians. Maybe this is a big factor of why the hobby is so much bigger in Southern California than anywhere else in the US.

Southern California is the main hub for lots of stuff, not just the fish hobby. Hollywood/movie industry, the custom automotive industry, massive sea ports, fabrication, and crap, just everything in general. it's such a big, booming area, it's no wonder everything that matters is centered around this area.

its bad here too the only time if seen a saltwater fish at an lfs was at petco an hour away

there are alot of asian communitys here and yes they do love the hobby but if i had to stereotype id say most of them are into flowerhorn. im 1/2 asian but i have about 8 close friends that are just as hardcore in the hobby as me and there hispanic and white.

And that is why I tried to pose my post more as a question/possible theory than as my explaination. Maybe it is incorrect that the proportion of Asians that are into fish is more than the proportion of other races. It just seems like the most bad-ass tanks are in Asia, but the explaination for that could just be CITES.
