Socal, the epicenter of the U.S. fishkeeping community?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
asians love fish keeping and are freaking insane about flowerhorns and arowanas, and the prices they command mean big bucks for fish stores. :)!

also i think it has to do wih feng shui. if you have running water in your home near the entrance, makes you rich or something. also in your room or whatever...

I think it is a combination of all these things mentioned... California is a big melting pot with lots of money, and now that people are hurting for money you are seeing lots of tanks being sold... the hobby in general is growing, look at the growth of MFK.

A lot of good feedback on this one. I'm glad, but still not sure what to think. I thought for sure there would be a obvious underlying reason.

Surfpalmsncycads mentioned the economy hitting the fish stores hard too, I hadn't given that much thought. Now that I do, I know most of the owners of those stores aren't rich and doing it for the money. It's a labor of love. So it makes sense a lot of them can't keep their doors open during these tough times, for them and for the hobbyist/customer. It's sad for the hobby.

I know there's some pretty decent sized reptile shows around NJ/NYC, yet no fish show/events other than what is put on by a private LFS. Are there any of these out in Cali? I know a lot of guys get together at Lion's Clubs and that kinda crap, but I'm talking about something on a big scale and annually?

Wait....Asia is closer to the west coast, correct? Faster shipping on live fish, maybe making Cali a hotbed for live imports? Possible?

I think the tri-state area around NYC/NJ features a pretty good group of collectors, certainly some of the best specimens on the web are on the east coast.

It's harder for us to get stuff, but we're not toooo far behind SoCal IMO.

They need they own category :irked:

The only large convention type show for aquarium fish that I am aware of is the one that the ACA holds each year.I attended the one a few years back that was held in North Jersey.I don't think they have been back to the east coast since then.

ACA is coming to DC in July 2011. It's being hosted by CCA (Capitol Cichlids Association) http://www.capitalcichlids.org/ For you Philly,NJ and NY'ers there is a club called *** ******************* http://www.*****************.org/ These clubs are a great source for rare fish, group buys, hobbyist networking, auctions and presentations, often by well known people like Paul Loislle and Ad Koning. Well worth checking them out in your area.
