Softshell Turtles As Feeders For Arowana?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wouldn't the shell be an issue for the aro? Their shells are still shells. Yea they aren't solid on the outside. But they are underneath the leathery layer. Idk about aro digestive systems, but I'd assume the shell wouldn't get properly digested. So. My guess would be its a bad idea. Plus. They're feisty little things with claws. Can't imagine THAT being good going down.

We have loads of feeder frogs in the arowana breeder shops! Those are another that we might get. You mean those white floating ones? I could keep some and feed them. XD

Oh man, I wish I had access to that, it's a little bit tricky to find non-poisonous frogs here as they are seasonal.

These are the white tree frog that I'm talking about:

Cute but satisfying for an arowana's gut :p

I definitely agree with Cloudk, the turtle's shell and claws might have some side effects on the arowana's digestive tract but if they're selling these at the breeder shops, go ahead and try em out but as always, proceed at your own risk.

Those are about $10 a pack in Hong Kong. Not poisonous, no claws, just plain swimming white frogs. Great surface food. Unlike fish which easily get sick. My dad says all the time: 'If they sell 'em in the breeder shops, it must be good.' About 3 inch long. You should get those shipped over if you want them, I'm sure someone sells little floating white frogs. They swim around kicking their legs like a human, pretty cute! And very tasty for fish drooling over them! My arowana now doesn't take feeder fish, he thinks they are too cheap and it's not good quality. After I fed him stream prawns, he took a fish and spat it out. Then he proceeded to go take some prawns. I wonder if he will stay on frogs, because if he does, that's going to be a big problem, we would have to drive an hour to the breeder shops and come back every day for his meal. What's an alternative feeder besides crickets, prawn, and frogs? And not feeder fish.

shippingnfor those feeder frogs would take a huge chunk outta my pockets as im pretty sure they have a minimum amiunt for shipping overseas (goes by the hundreds i believe)

For other diet how about scallops, mussels, tilapia, mealworms, earthworms, beetles, dubia roaches (this is illegal in our are though), smelt or maybe centipede if you can get those. There's definitely a huge variety you can choose for feeding aros. The only jist is if your aro will take em and/or if they get addicted to one.

I also dont like feeding feeder fish to my aro as thats gives your aro a higher risk of getting diseases , imo

There's a sticky here on what people normally feed their aros, i suggest to look into that as well.

Tilapia, smelt, and roach are all fish. Do you mean dead market fish? Those are dirty too! Those are from fish farms which are not maintained well. You just wash the fish and cook the bacteria away from it but it doesn't mean it's clean when it's in the market. Caught market fish however are fine. We don't have roach and smelt, but we have farmed tilapia which are not clean so we can't do that. I don't know where to find mealworms. I think we will just have to hike every week to get those prawns from the mountain. Or just buy feeder prawns.

By the way, going a bit off topic, I have been netting in the streams and I came across a population of fish that are supposed to live in Taiwan and China. I found them in Hong Kong. That's a new discovery! They are rhinogobius candinianus. I can show some photos. They are supposed to be on my Hong Kong species thread which kind of is really old. I don't know if I should update it or not.

If they sell it at the shop it is because it makes them money, doesn't necessarily mean it's good, I.E. feeder goldfish.

Tilapia, smelt, and roach are all fish.

Roaches are insects, not fish.
