You don't need to clean canister filters all the often. And you should never clean the bio-media. HLLE is a huge problem with oscars but yours doesn't look that bad. It may have just been the picture. Why don't you post more pics of your O and we can confirm if it has HLLE or not. Also what are your water params?
I'll see if I have any other angles on him that I can post. I can try to take some more pics later, but I assure you... MY pics will not look anywhere NEAR as clear as these pics do! LOL...

Bigtdotcom, nigaharu and flowerpower... thanks for the comments, guys! I really appreciate it. I try hard to keep this guys in great shape, so hopefully any of them that are not yet showing their full potential, will in the near future.

That angel is the craziest thing ever. Let me assure you... I have been AWFULL at keeping angels alive in my 55 gallon in the past. I have learned that those, like many fish, are heavily dependent on good stock, and buying them from pet stores... which is what I did... is not ideal. Anyway, this angel boggles my mind every day! He is just one of the guys in this tank, and will attack food just as vigorously as the argentae... and he will take food from them too! It's crazy... LOL... if someone would have told me this would work, I would not have believed it, if not seeing it with my own eyes.

Cool... thanks, flowerpower! I hope everyone agrees on that, and that he is not getting hole in the head (fingers crossed).

Hopefully I can get some nice shots of my green fliers in the near future too... such a cool, underrated cichlid!

Nope my bad, he looks pretty healthy.

Awesome! :woot:

Thanks to both of you for setting my concerns at ease. Younglin... thanks for letting me know your change of opinion also.

I kinda wonder if I switch to a black background, would it cause some more color to come out? Especially on the pearsi?

Dang it... sorry, mods... I thought I was in the media lounge when I was doing this, but clearly I was not. My bad.

That oscar is getting HLLE.
Actually he's not. Rich adopted this fish from an animal shelter a couple of months ago, I think through the local fish club. It does look like he has scaring from an eariler bout with HITH, but as of now he looks real healthy. All of his fish and tanks looked good.

Thanks bro. I also run an FX5 on my 125. I honestly clean it maybe once every 3-4 months. The more important thing is high quality food and lots of water changes IMO.

I'm going to disagree with you guys on the canister cleaning. The filter is the dirtist part of the tank. It's pulling the crud out of the display tank but it stays in the water column and breaks down. Even with over-bio filtration you're creating a nitrate factory. It's also a good idea to risne the bio media in a bucket of tank water. This will assist in keeping the bio media from clogging by removing any solids/debris that get past the mech filter - without hurting the bio.

Rich, once a month on an fx5 is a great cleaning schedule.

Damn, this thread is taking me for a loop. :screwy:
Rich, your fish all look great.
Your water looks crisp.
I see NO hith on that Oscar.
You're angel looks stunning.
Oh, and your argentae is top notch too.
:headbang2I was convinced the angel is fine with these guys when I saw the threads coming off his fins. The Argentae look better in person.
