I say cutting that piece of coral off was a good thing, and it's impressive that the coral is so old - without doing so scientists would not have known how old they are. This could have lead to an entire specimen being collected without knowledge down the line, which will likely not happen now - thanks to that study.

I agree with him. The HOLOCAUST and the U.S. SLAVE TRADE are sacred cows in our society and if one is going to make a comparison, they better think and speak carefully. . . .

Yes, he should speak carefully... but I'm not so sure because they're forbidden ground. I think it's because the coral reefs don't even have SENTIENCE, let alone reason. Besides, sifting through the brilliant (read: crap) reporting that was the 300 word article, do you even know why they cut the samples? The report speculated "to see how old it was". I see no proof of that. Until you see that it was for a frivolous reason you should probably go ahead and keep your mouth shut when it comes to comparing the slaughter of millions of humans with cutting coral.
 
ok guys i know cassharper isnt talking about me in that quote, but im just gonna say that i thought it was dumb that the scientists probably removed a portion of the coral that took a very long time to make.

no, we can discuss the holacaust and slavery all day. i'm willing to have intelligent discussion about either. it's just that it has to be intellectual and reasonable. they are not off limits, otherwise they might be repeated. in order for us to not repeat those horrors, we have to have open discussion about them. i just can't see comparing the holacaust to coral. that somehow trivializes it.
 
Without sample collection and research how would we know how old the coral was? What indication would we have of its growth rate? While damaging the coral for the sake of research may not be optimal, do you think it would be preferable to just leave it alone and risk it being destroyed out of ignorance because no one knew how old it was?
