Some Really Sweet Wild Black Belt Pics

The hands are not in the gills. They are grabbing the gill plates. I've released quite a few fish in my day; I know how to do it right. The fish were released fine. Don't throw stuff out there unless you know what you are talking about.

Believe what you want, it's a very easy way to damage gills. I fish rivers with ESA listed Salmonids - if you handled one that way you'd get a talking to by anyone on the river.

You cannot see the gills at all in any of the pictures you reference, so it's hard to see how you could have any basis for these comments other than you are upset about how you think they "might" have been handled. I will never "get a talking to" from anyone on the rivers you reference because I do not like to spend my time fishing for fragile endangered species like you apparently do. If I did, I would not be very quick to criticize others on how they "might" have handled much more robust non-endangered fish.

Awesome video, always love seeing some of the monsters we keep in aquariums in their natural habitat.

What kind of bait did you use to catch the fish? It is my understanding that Black Belt are not piscivorous game fish and don't take bait as readily as Midas and Peacock Bass.

Do you need a license to fish lake fish there?

I remember reading in an old article that in certain areas, the natives fish for the blackbelts with bananas.

I did not use any bait, only lures. I heard the best baits are these small river shrimps they have over there and I caught them in Costa Rica on those on another trip. They seemed to eat a variety of lures that resembled small fish.

Not sure about license requirements; the lodge took care of that stuff. We never got asked for a license.
