Those prices are outrages!

Silvers here in hong kong cost about $15US and thats for a really nice one. You can get cheaper not so nice ones for $5US

NO they are not rare. The prices you are seeing are obscene Australian prices. In America and Europe and Asia they are much cheaper.

But how much do you pay for jars, leichardti's, murray cod, etc? It sux though. I guess we take some of those fish for granted over here cuz they are so cheap. At least they'll probably all go to good homes over there though.

Jardinis, leichardtis are roughly $100 at 5 inch, both readily available in season around Nov. $150 for 10 inch.

Murray cod about $5 for 3 inch. Heard they were going for over $200 over in US:WHOA:

Not so much rare, but hard to get in. Australia has one of the strictest import restrictions, but once the animals are in Australia already, not much enforcement/penalties take place.

Eg Silver aros are not officially allowed to be imported, but at the moment, most lfs have a few in stock. They are not allowed to be sold by the lfs, so they don't put prices on the tanks. If Fisheries comes in, they are said to be on display, not for sale.

The high prices comes from smuggling the banned fish in the first place. Fish that are not banned, or can be readily bred in Australia, command a similar prices to o/s countries.
E.g clown loaches - $5, neons - $1
