Quick Question. If you have any other fish in the tank, have you used meds to treat them for anything. Anything at all that you have added since last week? Whats his diet look like.

post another vid with him in other container.

I haven't treated that tank with anything other than Prime for probably 6 months. It gets a water change every weekend, usually 40-50%. Diet consists of pellets (massivore, carnivore, cichlid), market shrimp, occasionally tilapia, and less occasionally live feeders.

I did not see him eat anything yesterday, but I only watched for a minute or two after I dropped in the pellets.

Not much point. He just kind of sits there. Every now and then he twitches like in the first video, or gulps some air, but otherwise isn't moving.

everytime iv ever had a fish like this they have pasted within 24hours. Iv never had this with a gar(thankfully) but iv had it when i kept other fish(my gar are my only fish atm, stange feeling)

I've never seen this before period. I've had plenty of fish die, but never like this. Even the gar I had die before just appeared dead one day, they didn't show any symptoms of anything (2 broke their backs, the 3rd was a mystery death overnight).

I guess I'll leave him in the tub overnight and see how he's doing in the morning. Should I put a small heater in there just to keep it from getting too cold? He's used to 78-80F temps, and it gets down to about 70-72F overnight in the house (sometimes colder).

Just saw this. I used Prime, like I do with every water change. Nothing different from the last one, other than its about 2 days past my usual water change day. We had a crazy weekend moving a lot of stuff between houses, so the water change got pushed back til tonight.

OK.. Just keep him in the container overnight.. I would not bother with a heater unless you think it may get below 70 in there. If needed be careful that it keep the temp stable and does not quickly change temps. An air pump with a very slow rate on it might be good to add just to keep some surface exchange going.

I'm not sure this is anything to major as of yet. It may just be a case of toxin poisoning from the De-clor not quite working as it should. All the signs point at this at this time. Keep in mind this does not always show signs in all fishes the same and some may react differently than others.

Shallow water should allow the fish to better take atmospheric air and reduce need for gill breathing for now. If it is a burn on the gills we should be able to figure this out in a short time by observing the fish in the current condition. I really would not overly freak out yet or presume doom as this may actually clear up quickly. Keep an update blog going as you can and I'll keep an eye on it.

Thanks Peje, I hope it does clear up soon.

The gar is still alive this morning. It's hard to tell if its any better or not. The color is almost back to normal, and it doesn't seem to be twitching as much, but that might be due to the shallowness of the water and the ease of breathing now.

I don't see any redness around the gills, but I did accidentally bump the container as I was removing the lid, and he seemed able to move in a coordinated fashion again. I'm going to leave him in the container all day and see how he looks when I get home from work.

Good advice from Pejelagarto. Hope he makes it for you. If he doesn't make it and you want another one, I have a 11-12" FL from John that I would be happy to give you.
