Im right in the middle of my plan to build and run my first indoor pond.
Because of the winter cold I will not be able to fill water into the pond in the unheated porch for another month.

But to get ready , and to get ready to start the pond's bio-filter, I decided to set up a 40gal tank for 6 goldfish.
I cleaned out the empty tank, (It had sat empty for months) and filled with normal tap water and turned on the charcoal filter.

The tank's filter ran without fish for 7 days!
Went to the store and got 6 feeder-type goldfish.
All died withing 24 hours......*%^*&%$&^#$&#$!!!...Rats...

Drained out all the water, tank sat empty again for another week.
Again I added normal tap water and allowed the filter to work for another 7 days before I went and got another 6 goldfish.
But I didnt just change water on this 40gal tank, but because I was already doing tank-stuff, I decided to change water on my 100 gal tank as well.

I did a 25% water change on the 100gal tank...

The next morning in the 100 gal tank I lost 4 large goldfish...each about 6 inches long.

after the 7 day I added the next 6 goldfish to the new tank....all were dead in the morning????

Whats wrong?
My tap water is "Rural Water"
Rural water here is from a well thats located about about 2& 1/2 mile away from my house.
Our water is pumped to us out here on the farms, (No water towers) and Im sure that they do add some chlorine.

I have lost fish before, but never like this!
Could the reason for the fish death be that in the spring they are adding something to the tap water?

what would I test for?

UPDATE....2 more large goldfish have died within the last hour!

I dont know what to do,,,,if I do another water change I fear I will just kill all the rest of my goldfish...

I keep thinking that after the water sat for 7 days with a charcoal filter running the whole time that there should have not been a problem.

At this rate i could well kill all my fish within a short time..???

It's like there is a real poison in the water....

Get a nice test kit and some Prime water conditioner...we are going to need more information regarding the outcome of your tests before we can assist you...PH,AMM N02,N03 are a couple to get the conversation started

maybe bring a sample of your water to your local LFS have them test it...

Obviously don't do any more W/C's!

Aerate the tanks water.

Call whoever is responsible for your water and ask them what they are putting in it for starters, if it's chlorimines it won't matter how long you aerate it they won't go away. You need to know this info.

It won't hurt to treat the water if it's not chlorimines.

Why were you running the pump for 7 days? Trying to get rid of chlorine or trying to cycle?

UPDATE:
all fish in the 100 gal tank are dead.

No reason for it.....I did a 25% water change....and it killed all the fish?

Dr. Joe. to answer you question. I filled the tank the first time and left it run just to make sure I filtered any hair or dust out of the water. That tank had sat empty for months and as I was busy with other things anyway, I just let the filter run.

After the first death of 6 goldfish I changed the water and allowed the filter to run for another 7 days just cuz I was freaked out and didnt feel in the mood for new goldfish right away.

The this is just a drop-in tank filter , and it ran with no fish for another 7 days...
Killed all the goldfish again.

Im tossing some fish I have had for years today.....no reason for it..a 25% water change should have been a good thing...never had a problem like this before.

get a bottle of prime while you are there and also get your self a test kit too.... they will both come in handy...

I dont think he is using prime.

Well my fishkeeping brothers and sisters...I have just returned from the Local fish store.
I took along two jars of water , one from each "tank of death"
I had the store owner test the water samples.

"Nothing wrong with the water".....?

The person tested all the things that you guys always are concerned about, (Even the PH stuff that I dont understand at all) and EVERYTHING is fine.

No problems with anything,. not even anything out of what you would wish for,,,everything right down the line as you would expect.

There is NO REASON for all my fish to be dead based on the water tests....

Dr Joe, you are clearly way smarter than I am about keeping fish.
If you did a 25% water change and it killed all your fish and water tested out to be fine, you would look for what other cause?
Suggestions?
Advice?
Questions?

sounds like a problem of chlorine, chloramine, or a heavy metal in your water. Did u use water conditioner? Like prime?
