Im right in the middle of my plan to build and run my first indoor pond.
Because of the winter cold I will not be able to fill water into the pond in the unheated porch for another month.
But to get ready , and to get ready to start the pond's bio-filter, I decided to set up a 40gal tank for 6 goldfish.
I cleaned out the empty tank, (It had sat empty for months) and filled with normal tap water and turned on the charcoal filter.
The tank's filter ran without fish for 7 days!
Went to the store and got 6 feeder-type goldfish.
All died withing 24 hours......*%^*&%$&^#$&#$!!!...Rats...
Drained out all the water, tank sat empty again for another week.
Again I added normal tap water and allowed the filter to work for another 7 days before I went and got another 6 goldfish.
But I didnt just change water on this 40gal tank, but because I was already doing tank-stuff, I decided to change water on my 100 gal tank as well.
I did a 25% water change on the 100gal tank...
The next morning in the 100 gal tank I lost 4 large goldfish...each about 6 inches long.
after the 7 day I added the next 6 goldfish to the new tank....all were dead in the morning????
Whats wrong?
My tap water is "Rural Water"
Rural water here is from a well thats located about about 2& 1/2 mile away from my house.
Our water is pumped to us out here on the farms, (No water towers) and Im sure that they do add some chlorine.
I have lost fish before, but never like this!
Could the reason for the fish death be that in the spring they are adding something to the tap water?
what would I test for?
