South American tankmate suggestions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Look into polypterus delhelzi or senagal very active cool fish

If you're willing to break the SA theme, I love Denison barbs. Also as to why the 2 black skirts are ok, I've heard a theory (unsound as it seems) that they leave a few alive to attract more/let them produce more.

I think his mouth might be too small to eat the Tetras. I've never had more than 2 so they've never harmed any. Thank you, I'll research those barbs. So far I plan on adding one or two Hoplo Catfish. Would corydoras survive? That is an intersting theory by the way and from my experience there may be some truth to it

I was just in a search for the same thing as you.

75g tank, young male gt, needed something. I ended up deciding on a group of synodontis petricola.

Another one I was looking at was pictus catfish group.

If you wanted these I would suggest rehoming everything else besides the gt.

You can tell from the development of the profile(forhead) on the GT in the pic it has instinctually taken over the entire tank as its own territory. Trying to add other similar looking cichlids would probably result in aggression and chaos. If you had added a number of cichlids together at the same time, you may have set up a hierarchy of detente between them.
You "could" try a very dissimilar looking species of cichlid that blurs the cichlid competition lines, such as one of the dwrf pike cichlids, )like compressiceps or regain). Though the tank is what I consider small (why I a say a "dwarf" pike), many get too large for a 75 alone.
But adding cichlids like that piece meal probably a crapp shoot at best.
Since you seem to want to maintain a geographically correct S American theme any barbs, or rainbows would be anti that theme, but you have a plethora of other S Americans to choose from.

Gymnogeophagus balzani are from southern Brazil, which is much cooler (almost temperate) than the tropical areas GTs come from. They are also much less aggressive, and because they have similar body shape, may be thought of as competitors, and may suffer from GT temperament. I always maintained balzani in tanks without heaters, and found when they were kept t constant tropical temps they became prone to bacterial and fungal diseases, especially as they age.

What about some gynimogeophagus balzani.

I made the mistake of keeping a female Balzanii in a SA community w/ a female GT and she killed it. "Angel" (of Death) is also the only fish I own that has not only killed, but killed over half-a-dozen other fish, so I decided this little psychopath female GT will always be the smallest addition to my CA community, since none of the SAs can really prevent her from dominating an entire tank. She currently makes a career bullying the harem of JDs and my male Dovii

I searched every local fish store and several not so local ones and have yet to find any hoplosternum cats. I was at Petco the other day, and they had a sale on black skirt tetras so I introduced five more. It still feels sort of empty and my green terror is still rather shy, but I have to admit, it does add more activity to the tank.
