It's pretty hard to mistake true Atabapos for other pikes that are commonly sold as Atabapos. Post some pics. Between Nut and myself we could ID your fish pretty fast!

couldn't of said it better...;)

pics are mandatory:popcorn:

I want you to describe them to me, as much in detail as possible...i know what to look for.... If i tell you, then you might say those things,
What kind of silly little site is this? Why would I lie about what my fish look like? Better yet, why would you, or anyone, care? But hey, I’m glad you’re out there, Mr. Self-Appointed Internet Fish-Police guy. You make sure no one thinks someone else has the wrong species of fish… now I can sleep at night. Okay, you know what to look for. Great. So don’t withhold information (oh, great and all-wise kemosabe) and we’ll all know what to look for. What are your references for these characteristics that only you can know? Anyway, pictures don’t lie. Why don’t I just post a picture of them? But then again, according your paranoid logic, I could post some pictures and then you could make up some characteristics that my fish do not display. Or you could disclose these precious nuggets of knowledge and then I could find a photo of a ‘real’ sp. Atabapo and post it as my own!

Either way, be very careful with them. sp. 'atabapo' pikes are more sensative than other pikes and are a lot easier to have die on you, trust me. Very prone to HITH, LLE, bloat, and varios other things.
Okay, thanks for the input. That’s good to know. The fish are in a 360g doing well so far.

If your serious about keepin them, go for it. If not, find some one who is before you kill them.
WTF? Just because I'm new to this site doesn't mean I'm new to fishkeeping. By the way, it’s you’re; as in, 'I think you are probably a bad fishkeeper who doesn’t deserve the fish he has,' not your, as in, 'I think your fish aren’t the real deal.'

I don't think PP meant those things the way you took them-though I can see why you took them that way- he was probably being playfull. In one of my earlier e-mails (and one of my first) I wanked on his aethetics for crenicihla- and he didn't bat an eye...which leads me to believe he enjoys a jocular exchange. I am not telling you you shouldn't be offended-only standing up for my belief that PP proabably meant no harm.

:chillpill: OWP...

Pikes are known for being mis labeled and/or identified. You can a bunch of articles on juvies looking alike and some adults too. Atabapo is a river/region with multiple variations like other rivers/regions.

Just look through this section for his FIRE threads and compare to your own fish. Im sure you took his comments the wrong way. Posting a pic is always best and its not to discourage your buy or fish knowledge.

Also, no one really ties post count or join dates to a persons knowledge or time in the hobby... thats just :screwy: :wall: :y220d: :nono:

It's not just you Open Water Predator, I read the replies and rolled my eyes and said to myself - could these guys be more condescending? Peanut Power does speak from experience when it comes these pikes, his had hole in the head and they died. Maybe he should have passed them on to someone who was more "serious" about keeping them.

You kinda over reacted man. Seriously. A lot of people have said they got sp. 'atabapo' and really had a different type of pike. Its rather difficult to get the real atabapo fires. Straight up. If you really were able to get some then definate props to you, and I WOULD love it if you posted some pictures. The reason I wanted you to give the characteristics is cuz some people have tried to brag about having the real atabapo and really didn't. If you could really describe what they looked like then you definately have them. Simple as that. If you post a picture of your fish, and they are the true atabapo then there will be no denyin it. I know ALL the pictures on the web. of true sp. atabapo...since they are practically my fav. species of pike. Personally, I would rather know what type of fish I have then go around and tell people what type of pike it is, brag it up, and then find out that its not really the fish I had.

Sorry my spellin wasn't up to your par, but i really don't care. It has nothing to do with anything, so poo on that...haha.

I was being SERIOUS when i said they are very sensative pikes. I lost all of mine unfortunately, really sucked. They are super sensative, watch your water parameters closely. I never said anything about you being a bad fish keeper. Just wanted to make sure you knew that they can be a very delicate species...especially as pikes go. I had never lost any pikes before until I tried to keep these beauties. They can be more challenging, but perhaps a larger tank will prove the key. What I was trying to say was that they are gonna be a lot of work. I was doin 30% water changes four times a week, feeding them a varied diet, and pamperin them to all degrees, and i still lost mine.

With a lot of patience and determination though they are gonna look awesome when full grown in that 360gal. I absolutely loved mine when I had them!! Now post up some pictures please!! ;)

I guess you know the whole story don't you? How i got mine in WITH HITH, how I did four 40% water changes a week, treated the tank with Melafix, added salt to the water, and gave them a very varied diet. Forgot to mention the part about where when they did die, they had no signs of HITH OR LLE, and that it was beyond my capabilities to save them. Stayed up all night trying to save their lives. So don't give me any of your sarcastic crap about not carin about them and passin them on to someone who was more serious about keepin them, cuz you couldn't of found someone MORE serious about keepin them.

Whatever dude. You don't appreciate sarcasm and I don't like a condescending attitude. It just bothers me when someone is an alleged expert and talks down to people who could know more than the expert. You are not the first one that does it and you will not be the last. I have been doing this more more than 30 years and I still don't consider myself an expert. I think at this stage I do know more than most, but I will never consider myself an expert. For what it's worth, I was the one that picked your sp atabapo out of a mixed pike shipment for John at ECZS.

I too have been doing this for over 30 years and Celtic makes me look like an amateur. I tend to listen when he talks...
