Spawning Blue Jack Dempseys or EBJDs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
can this be done in a 37 gallon tank? Also are the parent fish good parents or will i need to spartate the fry. Or does it depend on the fish?

depending on t demitions of teh tank as JDs can get to be 12 inches but normaly males 10 inches and females 8 inches but a 37 can hold hte JDs for a long time i guess. and yah there good parents u can leave the frys in there for 4 weeks after they hatch,.

nice EBJD. too bad LFS here dont carry these

What is everyones trick with the ebjd's? I haven't had great luck with them. They always seem to do well for a little while then die for no apparent reason. I am not a newbie, I have been keeping fish now for 18 years and have two degrees in Zoology. I live outside of New Orleans and our water is about neutral with a KH about 6 on average. From what I read this should be good. Any help would be appreciated. Before I try again I want to know what I am doing wrong.

These are the setups I have tried.

65 breeder and 125 gallon
Both heavily planted with malaysian driftwood and lace rock covered in java moss
feeding frozen mysis, blackworms, bloodworms, hikari gold pellets, new life spectrum pellets
tankmates, guppies, cories, angels, danios, sae's, otto's, etc (plant safe fish)

Any ideas?

so im trying to find a breeding pair of ebjd and a female bjd you got any for sale? by the way VERY VERY VERY NICE EBJD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if they are for sale pm me ok i cant find them anywhere around here

neither can i. you have a great pair foir sale i just might buy it.

Is 179ppm KH too high to try to breed EBJDs?

Awesome thread. Thank you for sharing your experiences!!

for the mortality issue with breeding 2 ebjd's together, look up 'double dark' or 'double black' angels - it's very similar, and more highly documented. at least with angels breeders could overcome the 'death gene' by backcrossing using other dark strains. it's much more difficult (impossible?) to overcome because the simplicity of the JD color genes doesn't leave a lot of room to work with.

Thanks for all the info! That is exactly what I was looking for. I wish you lived closer to B.C si I could but a female to breed to my blue jack, one that I knew for sure was 100% without the blue markings, Is there another way to ship them?
