Im a freediving spearo... dont know about any of the rest of you... heres a picture of me shooting a 30# 'er in lake michigan.

You get a better idea of the real size of this "monster" if you realize that im 6'1" and a pretty big dude... football player. This isnt the biggest one that hangs out there either, but the bigger one keeps on giving me the slip. :D

Nice ummm Carp? Also watch out the mods on this forum have it out for anyone who doesnt use hooks or kill carps.

i have been spear fishing once b4, it is really freaking hard!
I was just in some shallow water w/ my scuba gear on going after brim and i didnt get one.
I was there for prob an hour too lol

I dont use SCUBA, although I am certified. I think its more sporting. This was an AWESOME fish, and its actually in an online hall of fame. Remember that carp where I come from are an invasive specie and are INCREADIBLY destructive to the environment. We have a huge problem with them, so spearing them is a-okay. Spearing is also a VERY sporting way of gathering fish especially while freediving.

I'd love to try that sometime! Looks like fun - and yes carp are invasive and destructive. Get as many as you can.

Id be happy to get specimens for anyone who wants one. Shooting them does NOT kill them. A friend shot the biggest one we have ever seen through the gut, and it broke his spearshaft. I have been hunting "her" ever since, and you can see the belly scar, but shes real skittish now for obvious reasons.

Do you eat them....? thought Carp were too boney.
Honestly, if you're doing catch and release for the heck of it, why not try a net? Would be much harder, if your excuse for spearing is you like the challenge or rush or whatever, a net should be even more of a challenge, and doesn't harm to poor animal.

Nope. Not really. The only time netting carp is actually feasible is during the spring when they come in massive swarms into shallow water to spawn. Remember that I am hunting these on breathhold diving. There is no intentional catch and release. Most arent eaten. Not too boney, just not tasty. We spear other fish for eating purposes. Because of my religious beliefs however Im not allowed to kill anything that I do not eat. So most carp end up as fertilizer in the garden... therefore helping to feed me! We spear bluegills, perch, some kinds of bass and other panfish. For most eating purposes.

More power to you. I've always wanted to try spearing fish.

Addict and fobrinkle. If you ever find yourself in wisconsin, I will show/equip you. I work for a divestore so that wouldnt be a problem. Idk the spearing regulations in MN, but they are really restrictive in Michigan I know that. Probably only certain rough fish. Ill post more pictures when I get home tonight.
