Spearfishing Anyone?

Freshwater shooting is illegal in the UK, but I know guys that do saltwater. Great guys, and more than willing to help newbies. As long as you guys are all into the forum thing here you might as well check out www.deeperblue.net/forums Theres a wisconsin link on there so you can see what all I and my crazy buddies get up to (yes we do ice diving, youtube search: spearfishing wisconsin) and the rest of it is one of the biggest online diving communities. "Pastor" is in the UK, and would be a great resource if you wanted to get started/try out spearfishing. :D

In Indiana & Illinois its only legal to spear/bow fish for roughfish no panfish or gamefish.
Did you say you can spear bass too?

I've done a lot of bow fishing in IN, IL & MI, I baught a spear and I hope to try my luck this summer.

Do you eat them....? thought Carp were too boney.
Honestly, if you're doing catch and release for the heck of it, why not try a net? Would be much harder, if your excuse for spearing is you like the challenge or rush or whatever, a net should be even more of a challenge, and doesn't harm to poor animal.

Carp are good smoked or canned (tastes like canned tuna) but they would be too full of PCB's out of Lake Michigan.

Ive thought how cool it would be to spear in South America, or some of the Rift Lakes would be. Too bad you dont have any pictures of that day... it would be epic. Eventually Ill go back to South America, and Ill take my gear with me.
I have 2 pics but need to get them scanned onto my pc before I can show them. will see if I can get that done soon.

Well here it is...a couple more pictures to hopefully get this thread started up again. Does anyone else have pictures to share? Id love to spearos from other parts of the world. Interesting to see how one mans pet, is sometimes another mans quarry.

More carp and drum...the drum we eat...and we also take their ear stones. They make these little "oolith" rocks in their head, which are like half pearls. The meat is delicious grilled.

We actually even eat the drum we shoot bay side (considered dirty bc of the river...green bay ect.) The flavor is very clean, the meat is firm. So there really is no special prep. Heres what we do.

Take the big fillets...as you can see some of these fish are pushing 20# so the fillets are massive. If you want you can split them up into strips...which is what we usually do. Then we just cover them in olive oil, rub the meat in lime pepper (similar to lemon pepper..except...lime :D), and then we throw it on the grill...couple minutes, flip it once, couple minutes...done. Goes well with some fresh lime, and if you can make a mild green salsa or tapenade to go with it....awesome.

...and a nice cool refreshing beverage. Thats how we do our late summer bbq's up in door county Wisconsin...they start coming into the shallows to breed during mid - late july...and then all thats left to do is go and poke some. Everyone who thinks they are garbage fish should really try them again. They are good.

i catch way to many small drum on the crouix...i see alot of monsters on the snake r. and in a few lakes...i may have to try is...although i don't think you can beat smoked redhorse...
