Maybe I could throw my $0.02 in (full disclosure: I work at Segrest, but not in sales). We get in small, inexpensive "red texas" in a couple different sizes all the time. As you all now, buying these fish small from breeders means you get them cheap, but not all of these fade out to become the true red texas. The rest just end up as various types of FH (including some really nice kamfas)
So it's luck of the draw with a lot of these fish. We've even put aside a whole batch and grown them out in ponds here to see what the results looked like. A good percentage of them faded and turned into monster Red Texas. When we have fish like that (or request them from our suppliers), we call them "Full Color Red Texas" and the price jumps from $10-20 retail to $150-300 retail. I can tell you right now we haven't had those in in a little while.
Woofy, it sounds like that's what you were asking for (you probably saw it in our online catalog- which is not an availability list but a reference of all the fish we've had in over the last few years. Your LFS probably saw our smaller sized Red Texas on the list and ordered those. We make sure to explain to our customers that what they'll get is smaller fish that might fade to true red texas as adults but we can't guarantee it. Hence the confusion. I'm sure you got one of our medium red texas. It should turn into a very nice fish and perhaps fade out as it gets bigger. Hope that clears things up a bit!
