i am picking up my 75 gal tonight, and the owner told me of this specific substrate that is really good for african cichlids, but it is pretty expensive. play sand will do just fine as a substrate right?

i can't get any though. our local pool store moved far away and the only other place that i know of that sells anything pool is home depot where i guess they might sell it? how much is it per how many lbs?

Trust me go with the pool sand. (And Home Depot should have it). Sure it is like 3 bucks more per 50lb bag.. maybe 5 more than play sand. But it will save you a lot of frustration in the long run.

The substrate they mention is usually crushed coral, or crushed shells. If you have very soft low ph water you might want to consider it. Else you will be fine without it.

alright. home depot will have pool filter sand then? is it like the same color as normal sand? or is it like all white? also, i have tons of DE Filter Powder in my shed because of my pool, but it seems very light. that won't work will it?

They should have it. Or Lowes should too. Home Depot doesn't put a lot of there stuff on the websites.
