Spectacled Caiman in New York

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Trust me. Go with the arched platic greenhouse. It holds heat ok.

Dont worry about age. I'm 21 and can care for my animals far better than most people. Heck my caiman enclosure is far bigger than most peoples

Greenhouses only trap heat for a short time during the cooler/cold months and at night. If you buy an effecient oil or natural gas furnace for the greenhouse It will still cost a few hundred a month to heat during Nov-april. My wife and i used to grow Lady Slipper tropical orchids in Ithaca NY and looked into greenhouses extensively. What ever structure you build will need to bear the weight of snow and ice as well dont forget. You could probably get the structure built for 5-10K with a heater. You will need to cool the space in summer dont forget which can be very tricky and just as expensive! If you pick a southern exposure you are damned in summer. Northern exposure damned in winter......hope you have some natural shade! Choose location very carefully.

Well it all depends if I can get the permits. I was looking on the NYSDEC site and it didnt say there were anything more you needed to do than pay the fee and there you go you have them and your on your way. If it falls out that I wont be able to gain access to a caiman then oh well. I still plan on building a greenhouse around my catfish pond. It should stay fairly warm in the greenhouse by itself. But I most likely will need a heater to accompany it. They sell greenhouse heaters. They dont run to much and can keep the gh with a nice warm stable conditions. I may also incorperate some larger snake enclosures for the future BCI's and possible reticulated pythons. Hopefully they will email me back tomorrow...i wont hold my breathe that they will but when they do ill let you all know what they say. For now I will head back to the drawing boards and try to get some pictures of my plans up.

Good info here. NYSDEC Permits

Unfoutunately, heres the catch that you may be missing. On top of the fees, you have to do a required amount of educational shows at schools, ect. and there is no way around this. You cannot own any crocodilian in NY state for anything other than education. I actually looked into this when I wanted a dwarf caiman. Due to the potential danger, I also believe you have to have additional insurance in case your caiman ever harms anyone during a show. And DEC officers come to your house once a year at random to insure the safety of the enclosure, and also require proof that you have completed the necessary amount of educational hours.

One of my friends has a permit from like the 80's before it was a big deal, and he flat out told me that when the thing expires, hes not even going to attempt to get it again cause its too much trouble every year.

Important bits in yellow from link above.

Sorry bro, I wish we could both get one. :(

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea.
This is a huge under-taking.
I'm 18 as well, and I used to think about doing stuff like this all the time.
It all sounds good and fine in your head, but then you start building, and you realize it's not a good idea, and by that time it's already too late.

Trust me, wait until you have your own place, and a steady income.
You can never really be 100% covered for accidents in a hobby like this, and you have to realize these types of hobbies are all about money; and lots of it.

-This is coming from a broke 18 year old who has wasted a lot of money on ideas like this...

As another highly ambitious 18 year old I caution you to take a step back and really think about what you are planning, not just from a financial standpoint but from a time involved in building and maintaining such a setup as well. If you still truly believe you have the time, space, money, and dedication to do it then by all means go for it.

Like AttackFish, I used to and still do come up with big ideas like this, it's one of my favorite part of the hobby. If you look at my earlier threads on this site, you will see that many of them were about schemes I was tossing around in my head. (Still don't have that plywood 720gallon).

If you decide that you can't do this in your current living situation, volunteering at a local aquarium or zoo is a great way to get your fix.

I still dream too.
Last night I thought about turning my room into an enclosure for a Water monitor.
It would be THAT hard.
:P

I took a year off after high school. I may just build such an enclosure for my snakes and catfish pond. Forget the caiman.
