Who says you can't smell underwater? Isn't there a reason we add garlic extract when our fish don't wanna try the food? Or why blood attracts sharks over red food coloring?

from my experience, may ray just ignored the mega pellets even with starving them. I tried it as well with my ornate bichirs but nobody seems to like it. For pellets I'm still using massivore as a treat and feed regularly with diced pork heart and marinara mix. might be the batch i had, but i had the same feedback from local guys trying this new mega pellet.
Fish do smell, you have no idea what you're talking about so stop. Those little nostril like things on fish are called nares. Do some research.
