Spinning vs. Baitcast

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
stay with spinning, there are advantages to using baitcaster but that is only with BIG monster fish. it is easily controlled. ABU garcia makes really good 50-60$ bc. use bigger lines to practice. If you love fishing, and love big catches of 22# plus, then move onto BC, if you are fishing 10# fishes, spinning is good.

JD7 I didn't get a fishing rod until I was 27, that's how I suck at using them. All I know is that I throw a bait out and it never makes it back, then I curse a bunch. Spinners are easy and any line issues are easy to fix on that exposed spool.

I'm a big fan of baitcast rigs, but I also think that spinning rigs have their place, too.

I bought my first one around when I was 10 or so, and I immediately became infuriated with it because I couldn't get the hang of it; I ended up giving up on it and went back to a spinning rig. A few years later, I decided to try again, but this time I read a few guides on them and was very careful about how I set it up; with just a little bit of practice, I had the hang of it pretty well and decided to purchase an Abu Garcia C3 which I've been using since then for most of my fishing.

If you take the 10 minutes to spool and adjust it properly, then you shouldn't have any trouble as long as you do a little bit of practice before heading out. I typically do a few casts off my back porch with just a sinker on the end of the line in order to get a general feel for any new reel and to determine what I need to adjust.

sonny not real sure where you're getting this 22# number for the cutoff for baitcasters.. it really isn't a size of the fish thing with them, yes they do have more cranking power and are better for big fish in structure but there are so many different reels for different applications that your statement makes no sense. I can reap the benefits of baitcasting when fishing a plastic for bass if the fish is a half a pound... it can be the difference in feeling the bite and not knowing any difference at all. I'm also not gonna take my revo out trying to fish for grouper. many different sizes and models for each genre of reels so that's just not a good generalization

x2.

If your throwing heavy lures for long periods of time then baitcasters all day but I still use my spinning tackle for finess fishing as well a flipping in close corners !!!

Wiggles I think you may have hit the nail on the head. I always worry that I'll hate the baitcaster after I spend 100 bucks on it. I may try to learn it in my backyard over a winter, but I'm going to have to pick up a reel to practice with on the cheap. I don't have too much patience for trial and error when I'm standing next to the pond. Fiend I do use a bunch of lighter tackle and fish pretty slow so I guess I'm still good for a bit. I like to change it up though so what I am using in two years could be totally different than what I'm using today. Thanks for the help everybody, I'm still down for reel recommendations.

Baitcasters take practice. Get some spray lube from the fishing store and spray the line. You'll get more distance and fewer birdsnest. The reason those folks look down on spinning reels is because they think they pros. I have one and I only use it for striper fishing with a 1oz jig. If I tie anything lighter than that birdsnest city.

I never had success with a baitcasting reel. I like open-faced reels.
