Spiny Eel Versus Bichir?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I gave up with the search of how to pronounce it the right way since so many people call it differently. I just state the name of the species like senegal, ornate, delhezi, endlich

Bichir. I also pronounce it the way Ben does. They're more interesting than spiny eels. Some spiny eels are horribly picky with their foods.:irked:

Thank you Lupin! Thank you for all the input everyone. It seems an overwhelming response to get the Bichir.

That's what I'm going to do, the QT tank is sanitizing tonight, and tomorrow, I'm going to the store to see what's available around here. How exciting. I can't tell you the last time I BOUGHT a new fish on purpose!

unless you would upgrade for a fire or tire track.. def go with the Bichirs. Senegals may be drab colored but they make up for it with a ton of personality imo the best $5 i ever spent on a fish. Lupin also made an excellent point. spiney eels take abit more extra "love" then most species do. Bichirs are pretty much garbage disposals.

As an avid spiny eel fan, I feel confident in recommending.... Bichirs. Yeah, that's right.
For the record, I pronounce it biker. ;)

The problem with eels? They're scaleless, sensitive, picky eaters when young, and are suicidal (bichirs are too, but not like eels IME). I consider myself a very good fish keeper, I've worked in the industry, and have cared for many species of fish that most people have never even seen in person. My experience with eels? I have a 100% kill ratio. :(

The only thing I would recommend eel wise is if you could find and house a large adult spiny eel. Fire eels or tire tracks are great. When they're big, they are almost never shy, eat like pigs, and are very stable. Up until then it's always worrisome.

Bichirs on the other hand are relatively hardy, personable, not picky about food (occasional hunger strikes aside), and are just as interesting as eels.

What species are you thinking about? I know a seller that has some polypterus mokelembembe right now that are pretty rare and stay small, PM me if you want a link to their info.

I'd avoid the spiny eels, they are not as active and much more difficult to feed in general. Go with a senegal polypterus, very active smaller species

I agree 100% if you're looking for an affordable, easy to find poly that stays small. There are some other options like the one I mentioned but this is going to be your go-to species.

I would go with the Bichir. My friend has had them and they are very nice fish.

I'm a huge bichir fan. They are fun to watch, which is mostly the point in getting a fish right? My favorites are delhezis and ornates.

my brother has a eel tank and i have a bichir tank- never see the eels hardly ever. the bichirs have so much personality they will become your favorite fish in no time.
